How can I keep my game up during winter. I live in Alaska and won't be able to play golf till probably May. I just started playing last year and got my scores down to around 100-105 on 18. I want to keep improving but its kinda hard to when I live in an apartment and everything is covered in snow.

More strokes can be knocked off by being a better putter. Get a decent putting mat and develop a consistent putting stroke. Nice and toasty in the dark of Alaska winters. Now, if it does warm up to 30 below on some days, why not just swing a club outside? Use polar bear poop as balls or something? Have a friend who plays who has a garage? Set up a mat and a net and practice. There are some less expensive swing analyzer programs for iPads and phones that can make it worth while to swing a bit. Things like Swing byte, and that Zepp golf thingee. But- I would also look around, and see if there any of those kooky golf clubs around that play on the ice and snow. May not be the best for 'real' practice, but it might just get you out and have a good time- and you might meet people who have a place in SOMEPLACE WARM WHERE YOUR BALLS DON'T FREEZE!

Than working on your full swing?

What site have you been reading since you joined eight years ago?!

OP, spend a little time on your putting. Maybe 15%, maybe even 20% just because it's winter.

When you do, work on the three things to great putting:

Read LSW (click the badge below) too. Practice your full swing the rest of the time. Short game will be somewhat difficult in the winter…

In the absence of SENSIBLE temperatures... ANY practice can help... But I think I was getting at not "more" as is total, but "more" as in 'additional'. Sorry if it came out oddly.

Yes absolutely, "more" as in "additional." Particularly focus on the three keys to putting when you do practice putting (learning green reading will be tough unless you have an indoor facility)… and spend a lot of your time on the putts from 3-15 feet, and particularly from 3-10 feet. When you practice putting, that is…

How would you practice the bead portion of putting inside your house?

I have a net and mat that I set up in my basement (9ft ceiling) and I hit the Callaway Foam Practice balls into the net.  I hit between 50-100 shot's each day, working on primarily full wedges through 8 iron.  Last night I did hit my 3 hybrid a bit.  I will hit reall balls into the net for some chipping/pitching pracitce.  I also have a putting matt (Skilz accelerator) that I will practice some putting.  I really just focus on my stroke.  I did just down load the app Tour Tempo this week and have been playing around with that.  Even if you don't have room to do full swings you should be able to find space to chip and putt indoors.

Also, I do an acutal workout in the winter. Not trying to bulk up but I do work on my core and strength training.  I don't do a lot of cardio but I will do some.  Core work can really help stabilize your swing and prevent injury.

Page 109 has one good way.

Make a gate with two balls, that's another way.

I joined a indoor simulator, where for an extra 25.00, I can go(make appt.'s via the internet) at any hour...I've been there @ 4:30am...and s ome nights @ 12:30am...It's a great way for me to dial in my distances, if even in a controlled environment, but at least I have something to go on.I also am using impact tape.My question is I wish I can find somewhere, where I'm hitting the ball(toe/heel etc...) and how to correct that so as to where I am hitting more on the center sweetspot.

Thanks for any info on this...

Happy New Year

Cool, didn't even know we had that up here. 75 yard driving range is better than no driving range.

@jballard388 ,

Winter is hard for golfers in northern climates.  In addition to indoor ranges, other things you can do to improve are:

  1. Mirror work - use a mirror to look at your setup, takeaway and other points in your swing.
  2. Golf Fitness - Work on improved flexibility and power.

For the first, I would do what is recommended in the thread below.

For the second, I recommend the following books/DVD as well as the Titleist Performance Institute.  They have lots of drills.

  • 2 weeks later...

I went nuts last year thinking I needed to constantly practice during the winter and I got off to a slow start when the weather was better, scores weren't great for a month or so. This year I am limiting it to indoor lessons with my instructor and whatever playing I do. If it's nice enough to hit the range here and there I'll do it but not going to force it. I played very little after 08/31 with no practice and every time out it I was fine. I certainly won't make any gains but I don't think I'll lose anything.

Dave :-)

Never heard of this.  What's it for?

They have a bunch of videos to show how to improve your flexibility and fitness as well as swing drills.  It's free and many of the fitness/flexibility videos are similar to other ones I have tried.  Check it out.  It's not really a marketing site at all.

    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
    • Very much so. I think the intimidation factor that a lot of people feel playing against someone who's actually very good is significant. I know that Winged Foot pride themselves on the strength of the club. I think they have something like 40-50 players who are plus something. Club championships there are pretty competitive. Can't imagine Oakmont isn't similar. The more I think about this, the more likely it seems that this club is legit. Winning also breeds confidence and I'm sure the other clubs when they play this one are expecting to lose - that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
    • Ah ok I misunderstood. But you did bring to light an oversight on my part.
    • I was agreeing with you/jumping off from there.
