What should I do..get lessons or a beginners set first?

Hi guys, I just recently took up this game and was wondering if I should get a lesson or 2 before getting a set or just go and get a box set of top flites at Dicks? I'm really not a 25 handicap but more like a 45 haha. Anyways I'm using my friends set of older hippo irons and Spalding woods with graphite shafts and I keep taking too much earth and scarring up the golf course with my awful swings and I can barely hit it right. When I do it slices right but only when I manage to make solid contact. Should I get offset irons?? Thanks and please don't make fun of me I know I stink. Lol

It's possible to take lessons and look for proper clubs at the same time.

If you know people who play golf, get a recommendation on a golf pro that gives lessons and fits clubs. Then, tell the pro you're a beginner who wants lessons, and help finding proper clubs.

You should be able to get a good deal on lessons since it's winter time. Your basic swing starts to take shape after you play a few times, so lessons will show you the right way to swing. You don't want to ingrain a lot of bad habits right when you're starting. A good pro can help you "find" your golf swing.

As for finding clubs, at the start you just need a basis static fitting: find the proper shaft length and lie angle for your height and stance, proper grip thickness, and the right shaft flex.
