I'm just not sure how celebrated 83 will be? I feel like so much has been if majors that we undervalue how difficult it is just to win a pga event. When you look at the fact that Phil has 42 which is 9th all time, and that the majority of Tigers wins were at events with top competition. I just don't know if we are appreciating how ridiculous 83 is.

Aren't there some people out there that believe Tiger already passed Snead because some of Sam's wins are from exhibitions or something like that? I seem to recall reading that somewhere before.

Although it is a great accomplishment, Tiger always stated that his goal was to break Jacks major wins records.  I don't think there will be a great amount of hoopla because of Tiger's stated goal, and because it is Tiger who has lost favor with many in the golf media and golf world in general.

83? I'm wondering if 100 is within the realm of possibility. 90 definitely. Of course assuming his back holds up.

How the press reacts is how they gauge ratings/the almighty dollar. If they think it'll get ratings, they will pump the cr@p out of the record, forget the moral high ground.

I don't believe it will be a big deal, Most people have no idea who Snead was. The ones that do are older and are probably somewhat divided on meaningful records when it comes to breaking older records- realizing its and entire different set of circumstances today.

To my way of thinking, both Snead's, and Woods's accomplishments are already a "big deal" in golf's history. Of course I don't think Woods will ever win an LPGA title like Snead did, so Snead will always have him there.

Maybe not now, but if and when the time comes the media will pick up on it.

However this question does beg another question--why is Sam Snead so overlooked by the golf establishment and fans in 2014? At one point he was an icon of American sports. He accomplished a lot in this sport, and delivered the goods for many years. He won PGAT events in like four different decades.

It also speaks to the gross overvaluation of majors by the media and fans. If you are Tiger, or Jack Nicklaus, then you can prattle on about how "a golfer's career is measured in majors". For everyone else it's kind of pretentious poppycock if you ask me. Week to week, golf fans need to be entertained. There is way more to pro golf fandom than four weeks out of the year. Approaching 80 wins, that speaks of more than just talent, it's also extreme dedication and professionalism. For most of his career Woods gave 100% at every tournament whether major, nonmajor, even non-official events, even the European events (kidding, I love Europeans and respect their golf events). That is admirable. Now, he may be in Phil Mickelson mode, using nonmajors as tuneups and not necessarily to win. That sort of sucks, but you could say he has earned it. Phil has been jacking off at the nonmajors since like 2004 which is arguably kind of unprofessional. Play to win, chubby. That kind of thinking has now infected the likes of Rickie Fowler, who now thinks he has moved on to that stage of his career where "only the majors matter". Yay.

i swing from Tigers jock like its my job, but i voted NO, as in "Not really".  as has been posted already, nobody really thinks that Snead is a better or more accomplished golfer than Tigs is.

Well maybe I should change the question to should it be a big deal?

Interestingly, even though I'm the unofficial head of the TST Tiger Haters Society, I think that it's a very big deal....only to be exceeded should he break Jack's record.

I think that the great golfers of the past are a forgotten commodity since their great play happened so many years ago. Today's fans, and media are rooting for the current stars. History is a lowly by product in today's game. Most of today's fans never saw Snead play for the most part. In 60 years from now, some guy will be going for 90+ PGA victories, and Woods will be in the same boat with those 2074 fans, that Snead is in with today's golf fans. It just boils down to old news is just that...old news. Old news does not sell anymore. I'm lucky because as youngster I saw several of the past great golfers play, and as an adult I able to see today's great players play.

My youngest grand child who is becoming some what of an avid golfer knows who Fowler is because of his clothing. She likes Daly's choice of pants. She knows Woods, but likes Fowler, and Daly better. She has no idea who Palmer, or Nicklaus are, other than they played the game several years ago. She knows who Tommy Watson is because she has talked with him on a couple occasions. She can tell you all kinds of stuff about Fluff Cowan because she just likes the guy. She has a golf book by Bobby Jones she like to read, and her favorite golf movie is Tin Cup. In another 10, or 12 years she is going to be part tomorrow's golfing fan base. In 12 years I might not even know what a 9i is. :bugout:

You were ousted in a coup long ago.  Not enough venom in your posts. :-D

i dont see this happening.  i think in 60 years, winning more than 40 tournaments is going to be huge, because the talent level will be that much deeper.  it will be so hard to separate from the pack to be able to win that many more tournaments than any other player.

    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.
