So, the other day I was watching the GC, and they were talking about Zack J. and what he was doing in the off season. One of the things mentioned was the 1/2 swing drill, where you start the back swing parallel to the ground, and your finish stops at parallel to the ground.

Last night at the range, I decided to try this, what I found was pretty cool. I used my 50 * wedge, which I normally hit about 100 to 110 yds. While doing this drill I focused on Good contact, in fact, I was hitting the mat fairly hard after hitting the ball, so I figured I was compressing the ball fairly well, what was kinda cool was, I hit almost as far from the 1/2 swing as I normally do with my full swing, i.e. 90 to 100 yds..I almost had to do a double take, to reassure myself that the ball actually went that far, as I was expecting maybe a 70-75 yd carry.

Then I realized, what was making the ball go that far for such a small swing was 2 things..My arms were much more relaxed, and when I got it right, I was pretty well Sync'd up at contact. My relaxed arms, allowed the club to travel faster, I believe, which resulted in a decent carry. After doing this about 25 times, my right wrist started to hurt a bit, so I stopped.

What I'd like to know is, and the low hc folks and Mike, Erik, or Phil can jump in with a prospective, is what I'm thinking, is correct, and if it is, how can I apply this to my normal swing.?   My guess is, my normall swing still needs a bunch of work..lol

I do half swing drills all the time, a good strike will get out to 80% or even more of normal distance. It's pretty surprising.

Yours in earnest, Jason.

I do this drill all the time with my PW. I hit my PW about 112. If I put the hammer down on the downswing, I hit the half-swing about 100. I have the numbers. The shot just goes at a lower trajectory.

Yeah, it's eye opening how little you have to feel you're swinging compared to how far you're actually hitting it. I got my friend taking what he felt like were half swings and getting the ball out almost as far as full swings by virtue of better contact and lower trajectory. It's helpful. And I've used that thought for hitting safer shots when there aren't hazards to clear. So instead of a full SW to hit 105, I'll hit a pitchy 9 or PW, for instance, and feel like I'm making higher percentage good contact.

Yes shots that are hit with an abbreviated follow through swing can still go close to the same distance as a full swing, sometimes the same distance depending on the player.
