Any suggestions on brands for a beginner?

Should I be looking used? I picked up 50 titleist DT solo and 60 nike mojo for $40 shipped. I got these just to get me started and to have a bunch of spares. Not sure it was even a good deal or if these are ok balls for me.

For a beginning, the Titleist DT Solo and Nike Mojo are perfectly fine. Not great balls, and a half dozen or so years old, but they'll work. 110 balls for $40 is a fair price for what you're getting.

In my bag:

There is no ball that will hurt your game, IMO.  So at this stage of your career which ball should be about the least of your worries.  You will probably lose a lot so cost might be a factor.  Other than that I doubt you could even tell the difference.  So if money is no object get whatever you want.  If money is an object get the cheapest you can find and put your money into lessons and practice.  At this stage of your golf career an extra dollar spent on golf balls will have a far smaller marginal benefit than spending that dollar on lessons or practice.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

I started caring about the balls I was playing once I was losing fewer than 3 or 4 in a round. After that, I cared about playing the same brand. Now that I can go a round without losing a ball, I've gotten particular about playing the same model of ball and marking them beforehand. I started with DT Solos before moving to NXT Tour and now ProV1x, so it'd a fine place to start. I've become addicted to urethane balls the past few months, but it's probably a mental thing as much as anything. I'll be honest, I hate the Nike Mojo. I pass them off on my girlfriend, who likes them. For Nike, in terms of entry level ball, I think their PD Soft is actually a really nice ball. Much less clicky / hard feeling than the Mojo.

Logo,

If you're looking at used balls, buy them. If you're looking at refurbished balls, don't buy them. Used are just that. Found on/around golf courses and hazards and cleaned and repackaged. You can get good deals on them and they're just like what you'd buy in the store... they might have a scuff or scrape here and there (if you're buying the AAA and AA balls)... refurbished balls have had their outer coating removed and they've been repainted. There's no telling what you're actually getting.

If you're looking at new golf balls, get the ones that appeal to you and that you can get a lot of... you can get good balls in prices ranges from $9.99 to $24.99 depending on where and when you look. Golf galaxy and Golfsmith are always having sales same as Dicks Sporting goods...

Thanks for the help. I picked up these 110 balls just to have extras. I will pick up some new balls as well, still not sure what to buy. When I was a kid all I used were the multicolored pings and pinnacle gold. Ping doesnt even make balls anymore and there are like 50 brands at Dicks.

Well, you can be like a lot of us and buy new cheap golf balls... personally I use the Snake Eyes Extreme Distance from Golfsmith. I'm fairly happy with them, and they're cheap per dozen at like $9 on sale or so.

I'm slowly switching over to Wilson Staff 50 Elite balls. They're softer and only like $12 per dozen. I picked up a couple dozen Bridgestone B330rx and I'm impressed and actually notice a difference with how they do improve my game but I'm not able to spend $30-45 on a dozen balls... so I stick with the Wilson Staff ones.

Don't get me wrong, if I find a Titleist Prov1x on the course, I'll put it in play... but I won't buy them for myself. There's too much chance for me to lose them to be cost effective for my game.

Top Flite Gammers are great for 20 bucks a dozen. K Mart sells a ball called Fuzz. At 13 bucks for an 18 pack they are great. I'm a single didget handicap and I use these myself. Don't listen to the 50 dollar pro v stuff. Just for golfers with brand nameitus.

Wow, I wish I had some of those multi-colored Ping balls you played as a kid.  Alot of those are extremely valuable on Ebay, depending on the color combination.  They can range from $5 a ball to over $150!

Haha that's awesome. I definitely have a bunch of them hidden in my parents attic or garage.

Avoid used golf balls. Some are water-logged (dug out from the bottom of water hazards after years), and don't perform anywhere close to original.  Buy new balls on sale, logo overruns, or buy "X-outs / Practice" (cosmetic blems).

Thanks for the tip. I have bought a few dozen new balls for the course. The used ones I bought are perfect though - I bought a net from amazon and have been hitting them in the backyard.

I played x-outs my first year. Most of them end up lost in the woods or in the water. You're probably not keeping a handicap your first year anyway. You're using a foot wedge. Tossing the ball out of the woods. And basically just learning how to hit the ball. x-outs are non-conforming so your round doesn't count. It's a practice round. Just play and have fun. Practice on the range and take some lessons.

    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
    • Day 96 (18 Mar 24) - Continued work with the Divot Board with the GW and hard foam balls.  Focused on small target/small miss…setup to hit target about 30yds out - success if it hit within 6’ circle of target, fail if outside.  Had decent success averaging about 3 out of 4 (hitting in groups of four).
