How Would You Play It? (5th Hole at Capital Hills)

@Parker0065 asked me to do another one of these and specifically this hole.  I've come to realize that @boogielicious is way better at writing on pictures so I'll explain this hole.  It's a Par 4.

There are times when they set up the Men's tees on the first tee box and there are times they set it up on the second tee box.  This hole plays as follows:

Championship tees: 265 yards

Back teebox, men's tees:250 yards

From teebox, men's tees: 220 yards

The fairway is narrow with only 35 yards between the trees on the right and the trees on the left.  You're pretty much in jail if you hit it in the right trees but you might have a shot if you're in the trees on the left.  There is a creek which runs along the right edge of the fairway all the way up to and beside the green,

There are two bunkers -  one on the front left and the other on the front right of the green.  I didn't put in the picture but 14 yards separate the bunkers.  The green is 30 yards from front to back and 18 yards across.

The way I go about deciding how to play this hole really depends on where the tees are as I play the men's tees.

If the men's tees are in the back, it also depends on how I'm doing with my driver that day.  My miss is overdrawing so I'm not really worried about slicing the ball into the trees on the right, so, if I'm hitting it straight, I'll go for the green and hit driver, aiming between the 14 yards between the bunkers.

If I'm not feeling confident with the driver, or I'm playing from the front teebox, I'll hit 5W since it goes around 200 yards and I usually hit it pretty straight and, if I'm hitting from the front teebox, there's a very good chance the ball will go over the greens with driver.

Do you play this any differently?

Christian

Depends on the sizes and distances of your Shot Zones.

Driver or 3W. Pitch or putt to follow that.

I said somewhere that these threads would seem pointless after we released the book, and I stand by that… :-) Everyone should be able to answer these questions for themselves.

I'd play it to just to the right of the "35 yds" text then wedge it in. Good chance for birdie. Too much trouble for an errant driver.

Ahh, didn't see that.

Sadly, since I haven't found someone to in the area that has a FS/TM that you can use for an hour to plot my Shot Zones.

Probably will have to wait until spring to do it outdoors.

You can get a reasonable facsimile of your shot zones just by estimating at the range. And the general concepts in the book don't even really require shot zones to execute.

Maybe in sunny California you can, but in Albany, NY, where it was in the single digits last week and we have snow on the ground right now, the range isn't an option at the moment. ;-)

But the book came out like 9 months ago. Besides, if you can't go to the range now then you can't play golf either, now can you?

Because its a very narrow fairway, I would play my 9-wood to the left side of the fairway (170-180y). No water in play and it looks as if there are less trees compared to the right side. This will leave me a 40-70y shot to the green.

If you have an indoor range with any kind of launch monitor, you can get a good idea of the shot zones.  That is what I did after reading LSW.  I didn't really look at the short distance clubs indoors because I got a good estimate of distance and dispersion at the outdoor range.  But the longer clubs need the launch monitor more, at least for me.  I have a hard time estimating distance when it goes out to 180+ yards because at my ranges, I can't really see the ball after it rolls out. I would recommend going to a launch monitor and doing Driver, 3W, 4 iron and 6 iron to start.  You can interpolate the other clubs (5W, 3H or 3I, 5I) from that.  The important thing is to keep the "tendency" in your estimate.  Example: for me, my tendency is a draw to over draw.  So my shot zone is an ellipse that is longer left and shorter right.  When I push it, it goes shorter and right.  Include all data except obvious mishits.  This is the perfect time of year to do this in the frozen Northeast! I googled "Albany Indoor Golf" and got this. http://www.greatindoorsgolf.com/

Yah, I'm going to map it out like it says in LSW but I'm leery about using a simulator that isn't FS or TM. I used I've at my local Golf Galaxy and posted the results here and overall the responses I received were that those numbers shouldn't be trusted so not sure if I want to gamble the $35 or so. Have you used simulators before at places like these?

The indoor range I use has an AG2 and GC2 simulator.  They are pretty close to what I've experienced on the course for distances.  I did the Titleist 915D2 review with the G2.

Silly hole here it is a par 3. I can only think of one par 4 here that short and it is 299 yards. But it has a huge tree in the middle of the fairway that is nearly impossible for most to hit over.

Wasn't meant to be a put down or anything. Short par 4's like this are a pace killer because people wait for the green to clear. We have a few in the 300 yard range. One follows a par 3 on a side with 3 par 3's so you have groups waiting on tees for greens to clear on 4 holes. IMO short par 4's only make sense if there is a way to start the hole without waiting for a green to clear. That is why I think it's silly.

Well, if you can drive the green and take out Driver, then of course you have to wait for it to clear.  It's got a host of problems on the right and depending on how you play, the risk/reward factor is something you really have to consider.

I like potential scoring holes like this and it's one of the few holes that someone with my skill level (or lack thereof) can have a realistic chance of getting a birdie.

    • Makes sense.  Like I said, I wouldn't have been upset at their original offer either, and based on the fine print it seems like they've held up their end of the deal.
    • If you've only had to adjust retroactively one time in 8 years and have around 5 people each year without handicaps, that's like 40-50 people total so it sounds like you're doing a pretty good job. I think your questions give enough to go off of. This might be a good way to get new people to actually post a few scores during the 6 weeks leading into the first event. Something like "New members will be eligible for tournament money once they have at least 3 posted rounds in GHIN" or something like that. If they can get 3 rounds in prior to their first event, then they're eligible. If not, they'll soon become eligible after an event or two assuming they play a little bit outside of events.
    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on. 😉 Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seem  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
