Any thoughts on what golf might be like in a 100 years? 200 years? Will we still playing out doors, or indoors on very realistic simulators? My guess is those future golfers will be playing 18 hole rounds in their living rooms via holodecks.

What might futuristic clubs look like?  How about one club doing it all? Just turn a dial to the distance needed, and let it rip. Probably, because there is already a one club, crude version now available.

Hi-Tec, programmable, self cleaning balls? Yeah that's doable. One ball will last 100 rounds, since it can never be damaged, or lost. After 100 rounds you turn it in for a new one,  just because you want a new ball.

If still out doors will the courses be longer, or shorter? I'm guessing shorter due to the lack of land area available. Pebble Beach,  Bandon Dunes, and most all coast line courses will be under under water. All the current great courses will be gone.

If still played out doors, will a cure for slow play have been developed by then? Yeah, probably.  If a golfer falls behind by more than 30 seconds, a miniature cattle prod will automatically go off in the slow pokes butt. No penalty strokes however.

Will Nicklaus, and/or Woods even be named in any golf conversation that far into the future since neither had won 65 majors, or had 150  wins in their careers? Most likely by then there will be 52 majors available to the pros a year. :-P

In My Bag:
A whole bunch of Tour Edge golf stuff......

In 100 years I'll finally be wrapping up the round I start playing during this August at my local muni.

I think you're right that simulators will be a big part of golf for most people. And once we terraform Mars and get to play in its low gravity, I think I might be able to finally drive the ball as far as people on the internet do now.

Call me a cynic, but the way we're headed, it's going to be a much more exclusive activity afforded only by those with a much higher amount of discretionary income than today.  Even more depressing is will the environment be able to support the same number of courses given the population in 100 years. I want to be wrong on this, I really do, I hope I am.

On the brighter side, I think instruction overall, will be better.

Steve

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

You're not being a cynic or misanthropic in any way, just being a realist. It is what it is..

I'm thinking that the changes won't be as drastic as Patch see them, only in the fact that the last 100 years has seen a lot of change, but then so has the world in general.  I think the biggest change could be in materals that make balls and clubs, likely that some super compound will make balls everything you ever wanted and some new metal will be created for clubs that make them amazing, but all in all, golf will be played the same way, in the same places.

Yeah, wanna make 14 dollars the hard way?
