Hello, I just bought the Garmin Approach S4 for $300 recently. I haven't opened it yet so I can still return the item. However, I just found out Garmin is coming out with the Vivoactive this April. The Vivoactive has GPS, color, touch screen, apps for multiple sports (including golf), "smart"-ish watch and retails for $250. The look of the S4 is enticing because its not so "techie", but it may be outdated with the advent of the smart watches. Is it a no brainer to wait for the Vivoactive? What are your thoughts? Thanks.

Mark

I'm not a fan of brand new items. I wait for round 2 so the bugs can be worked out.

Just played first nine holes with vivoactive Very good accuracy based in plates on the course. Fairly easy to use took a little while to load my course. Liked the score card coming up and advancing to the next hole automatically. Not sure how to track putts or fairways on the watch shows on the web page. Used less than 20% of the battery.

I have played a couple more rounds, still very good accuracy.  The only issue I have had is if you do anything else on the watch it shuts down the golf app and you loose your round information.  Then have to start over downloading the course and going to the hole you are on.  This has happened a couple times so I know not to try and change apps.  I emailed support and am waiting to hear.

Slight OT -

Recently bought the Approach S3 for $179. Simple, gives yards to front/middle/back and you can adjust pin placements and save five spots per hole for later use (bunker, dogleg).

I really like it due to the simplicity of it. How far - peek at watch - address ball - go.

Gambling is illegal at Bushwood sir, and I never slice.

I don't like that the VivoActive requires your phone to download the course to it.  I much prefer the Approach method of preloading all the courses and allowing the location to pick the course you're playing.  I also don't like that the VivoActive doesn't record steps like the Approach S6 and VivoSmart does without the footpad.

The VivoActive feels like a Garmin Frankenstein watch, they took some features from some of their different products and rolled them into one watch.  It does 80% of what you want / need it to do but leaves you wanting more which means you end up buying more sport specific Garmin product anyway.
