Simple question: Has anyone ever carried a 9-wood? Does anyone still? It seems to be about dead... same with the 11-wood?

What's in Shane's Bag?

I have a callaway war bird stye knockoff 9 wood hanging around in the basement. The one I have actually says 31* which is a lot more loft than you would typically see on a club labelled nine, more like a 13 wood. Don't use it any more but I remember knocking it stiff for a tap in birdie on a 190 yard par 3. Too tough to control the distance consistently because it went 200 feet in the air and would be completely at the mercy of the wind.

No, but I have some regular playing partners who do. One of them has a wood up to 50+ degrees?

Same here. Although a 9 wood is the highest he uses.

Both the 9W and even the 11W have re-emerged with certain club makers. Callaway and TM are two companies.

And oldies are still around. This fall I stumbled across some classic Big Bertha Hawkeye FWs. The Hawkeyes (circa 1998) have:

  • a titanium shell head, and the Gravity Screw tungsten disk in the sole to lower the vertical center of gravity.
  • an R-flex Hawkeye UL (ultralight) graphite shaft
  • new grips, Midsize Golf Pride New Decade Multicompound
  • a price of $40 each

I bought the 3W in November and tested it out, and then bought the 5, 7 and 9W. I haven't hit the 9W yet.

(I bought them partially for historical reasons, although the 3W flies quite nicely).

Several Callaway FW models featured 9W and 11W. Here's a sample from about 2003:

#11 25° RH / LH 41" 58.5° D0

After the U.S. Senior Open in 2004, the hybrids came on strong. As a result, most companies dropped the 9W and 11W - and sometimes the 7W - from the offerings of many FW models.

The 7W bounced in and out of various Callaway models until 2011; then, the Optiforce included the 7W and 9W, and the XHot onward have included 7W, 9W and 11W for the non Pro models.

For TM, the original RBZ (2012) had a 7W and a 9W, but the RBZ Stage 2 relabeled the 7W and 5W-HL, and the 9W as 7W. The new Aeroburner has the same mix and lofts as the RBZs2.

When I caddied about 1968, some of my players carried a 9W or an 11W. These came from botique club companies.

I have a 28*  degree metal wood that I am assuming is a 9 wood. I don't use much anymore, and it stays in my wife's golf bag. She uses it to hit chip shots with.

I just never got use to it for some reason, even though i hit some pretty good shots with it. I do carry a 7 wood, which is one of my "go to" clubs when the need a rises.

I have carried and played both 9 and 11 woods.  I just replaced my 11 wood (Cally Steelhead+) with a Ping K15 7 wood.  Problem is I hit the damn 11 wood to damn far.  If I step on it I can get all but 200 out of it.  I need something shorter of all things.  A regular hit with it is 180.  Just too long.  It works very well, straight and just waaaaayyyy to long.  And to add insult to injury it's a stock "A" flex shaft.  Never gonna sell it.  But I'll rotate it in and out of the bag as necessary.

Is it just me or does it seem like those circa 2000 Callaway Steelhead Plus lofted woods (7, 9, 11) seem to go farther than they seem like they should?

I picked up the Hawkeye FWs this winter (3,5,7,9 W) - in very good condition with new grips for $40 each. I got them initially for historical purposes - compare to newer models.

I went out to play a few holes one day with the Hawkeye 3W, just to hit it a few times. I hit some ok shots. Then, off the tee on the final hole, I carried the 3W shot 240 yards going into a 30 MPH headwind!  And, it ran after it hit.

That would have been a solid shot with my RazrFit driver.

The Hawkeyes had a titanium shell head and face, plus a Gravity Screw tungsten disk in the sole to lower the center of gravity. This sounds a lot like the high-speed cup-face technology Callaway is touting in its XR FWs and irons, and in the nouveau Big Bertha irons.

Haven't decided for sure, but I may give those 1998 Hawkeyes a chance to make history here in 2015.

    • Yea Club Rat said it. I really enjoyed the Senator and the Judge, then over to Grand National where there a couple good courses plus a fun par 3. The one I do play whenever I visit there is Ross Bridge; something about this course that is just good fun. I hope to play more of the courses in the future, but tomorrow is promised to no one, so hope is the key word. Have Fun, iSank

I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
