I'm a bowhunter. Like to hunt anything that moves. My golf game really sufferes in the fall because I'm always hunting. Hogs and Deer mostly.

Anyone else? Feel free to post pics of your kills, hunting rigs, etc....

Not me personally but my golf and shooting buddies all do. Oct 1 is opening day for bow deer season and even though its still pretty warm, everyone is scattering for up north to get their bait piles and stands setup.

That's what I'm talking about!!! I have a 40lb. bag of corn in my trunk as we speak, and I'm going to purchase a new treestand after work! I can't wait to smoke a buck this season.....

I'm from WVa...what do you think...
bowhunt w/ custom TD recurve-
rifle hunt w/ German 8MM Mauser(with Nazi markings!)
Gobbler hunt w/ Remington 1100 with many notches on the handle...
I agree with feeding deer during summer, but not as the season approaches..it's called "hunting" ... not "baiting", which many "hunters" do.
Good Luck this year

As long as baiting is legal in the area you are hunting, I see nothing wrong with it...I think the "holier than thou" attitude of hunters that don't, or can't, bait is rediculous. I guess some people think that's cheating. i don't see it as being any different than using estrous scents or any other kind of lure. If baiting is cheating, then so is hunting over a water hole, or next to a corn field.

A little FYI, in 1970 the Michigan DNR put the southern half of lower Michigan's deer population at 200,000; this year its 900,000.

Case in point! We need to kill them suckers, or they will breed themselves out of habitat.

I think it's cheating.

I believe it's a "purer" endeavor when you scout out a location rather than tricking the deer into making regular stops there. But I don't really care enough to cop an attitude over it. It's like moving your ball on the golf course - so long as you're not playing a match against me, you're only cheating yourself.

Have you ever gone fishing with a bare hook, and just tried "looking" for fish? I think not...

I do that all the time, actually. They're called lures.

In fact, the only time I've ever really baited a hook in the past decade has been when I've gone shark fishing. From my kayak.

Most of Michigan has a limit on the bait pile size (5 gal IIRC) because of the bovine tuberculosis. Last winter was relatively warm so the herd is so big that a real bad winter will result in many deer starving. The DNR does its best to manage the herd down to numbers that the available food supply can support thru hunting tags but I believe that the harvest target numbers aren't usually met.

-Michigan has 25,000 deer-car accidents a year. That's one per county per day.

-In 1948, the deer herd population in the L.P. was 15,000.

I'm personally against hunting. It's the same thing as killing any other animal.

holier that thou...depends on how Ethical you are about it... if "killing deer" is you #1 concern, then nothings' outta bounds. some of us have a greater respect for the "fair chase" perspective. I'm not sure baiting is legal in any of the states, But I'm not positive. as for hunting near water holes(out west), it's about the only way you'l kill a pronghorn w/ bow.... as for the corn fields, that's Fair Chase..try it sometime and see how easy it is to pattern a buck to know EXACTLY where he'll be entering/leaving the field.

I know for SURE that Fred Bear..Howard Hill...Saxton Pope..Art Young NEVER hunted over bait, it's against the "laws" of fair chase. as for scents, who wastes $$ on those? you'd be better served becoming a better woodsman......

that's your opinion...you are entitled to it..but if you enjoy seeing most species of big game, THANK A HUNTER, cuz it'ds HIS $$s that keep 'em managed.. not the non-hunters...and that's a FACT! most states DNRs are supported SOLELY by hunters revenues....

And i don't...

I couldn't agree with you more. Especially coming from FL. where the deer look like freaken greyhound dogs. You had better bait, feed and trick them in, anyway you can.

I took my son to TX last year and never saw deer so big. You mean to tell me this deer ranch (hunting lodge) doesn't bait and feed these monsters.... Please. Those of you purests do your thing and we'll do ours. i eat everything I kill and I don't kill unless I'm gonna eat...

Feeding: done without hunting

Baiting: done while hunting.....see the difference ? ..and I will do it "our" way.... have for over 40 years, see no need to lower my standards now.......
