I have an upcoming society day for a friends Stag do at the Shire, Hertfordshire (& no LOTR related!).

I wondered if anybody had ever played it at all? Mainly UK members but heck a few others may have found their way over there too.

It is a Seve designed course, & tbh it looks immaculate, but also pretty challenging at the same time (no surprises there then)!

It is an interesting layout, a 6-6-6 set up, so you'll never play 2 hole lengths twice, (par 3 followed by a 4 by a 5...) and is a pretty young course.

The first hole I believe is a 200 yard par 3 surrounded of course by water (subsequently there is water surrounding all par 3's!) & if you take a look at the link below it gives you an idea what's in store for me!

It is interesting how others view the course, in the link below the comments are rather mixed!

So with about 3 weeks to go, I think I better get my game in check, any help, advice & thoughts are much appreciated!

I remember looking at this a while back and liking what I saw but I can definitely see it dividing opinion. The massive amount of water - and that one S bend hole would certainly put some traditionalists off! I'd just focus on ball-striking and your course management more than anything. Thins/Fats on that course will be brutal, and having a sensible plan of when to pull driver/3 wood will be vital. Have you thought about long drive/nearest the pin stuff?

Let us know how it goes - I'd love to hear your thoughts on the course.

Currently focusing on: Key 4 - shorter backswing.

What's in the bag: Callaway X2 Hot Driver, Titleist 915F 3 wood, X2 Hot 3 Hybrid, 3, 5-AW Apex Pro irons, 54*, 58* Cleveland RTX, Odyssey Versa 1 Putter

I played a society day there a couple of years ago now. It is hard, some of the landing areas off the tees are very unforgiving. We played off the yellow blocks and it was pretty windy, one of the par 3s would have been a lay up if we had played it off the back.

It was a team event with best 2 of 4 counted which made the toughness not so bad.

The service from the club itself was excellent.

Have a great time!

Should be an interesting day for me then!

I am not the one organsing the day, merely turning uo to attempt to play, just wondered if anybody on this site had a thought too! As I said the views on the link are rather mixed.

Right so we finally played the society day yesterday, So thought I'd update you chaps.

We had 28 people in total so 7 groups, on what was a great day for golf, the course in my opinion was fantastic definitely the best I've played and in great condition considering the time of year, greens were like carpet.

We played off what they called the Sapphire or blue's (the equivalent of the yellows for most courses) which IMO made it much more enjoyable and everyone coming in had pretty good scores, walking past the 4th what would have been a 180+ yard par 3 over water looked horrific so it was good to be able to play that from 130.

The First hole par 3 proved an interesting start but fortunately I found the green and par (unlike some of the other more distinguished players!) and I actually had one of the best rounds I've ever shot. I somehow managed to win the front 9 playing of 28 scoring 23 points and a handy £70 in my back pocket!

Closest to the pin was the par 3 7th island green playing bout 120yards from our tees, I landed 2 club lengths away and putted in for birdie! somehow I also walked with that prize too.

The back 9 felt a bit harder & played longer so I lost it a bit of ground here, but throughout there was some great picturesque holes. We finished on the interesting 18th which was also the hole for longest drive luckily I stayed away from the water hazard!

I was out in 49 ( and thinking I could break the ton mark) but back in for 57 with a handicap score of 36, which I would have probably ripped your hand off for had it been offered to me beforehand. The winner of the day shot 39 so to finish top 5 was a great day for me and thoroughly enjoyable.

Facilities & staff were impeccable shower rooms, teas/coffee bacon rolls before we started, a great course and then a lunch afterwards all for £50.

Update on the stag, he was given 2 bottles of vodka and told for every birdie made by the field he had to take a shot as well as every time he scored par. Lets just say by the 18th it was amazing he could still stand let alone swing!
