I presume a lot of greenskeepers are happy with the snow cover? Keeping a nice insulated layer on their greens is better than having them hard freeze and thaw, freeze, thaw, etc... should be some nice rolling in spring.

I guess it depends.  Too much snow cover out here and it can cause some kind of a mold to grow, and actually damage the greens.  I'm no horticulturist so I'm just going on what I've heard in conversations when we've had a year like you guys are having.

We have 3 feet on the ground and 12' more coming in the Boston area.  Not sure if that will be good or not.

Luckily Dayton has had sparse amount of snow this year. I don't envy you guys in the north east. :-D

I was talking with the club pro about joining the club and was asking about things.  In the conversation I brought up about really late in the fall or early spring golfing.  I wondered if the greens were covered or not.  He said they experimented with it on one hole for a year or two but everything is uncovered.  I took it that it really wasn't worth the bother.  I guess I never noticed what was done while driving by the course all these years.  Our wintry season is about 3 1/2 months of cold and thaw cycles with probably another month of that with some kind of snow cover.

I did see two guys playing over there when it was pretty chilly out.  I'd say right around freezing with no snow cover.  All the flags were removed, they were walking, and carrying two clubs apiece.  They were both dressed for the occasion.  That is dedication in my book.

Our local muni covers at least some of the greens with a type of tarp.  They only lost part of one green last year but the rest were in great shape.  I'm not sure what the best thing to do as I am not an expert.  I also has been very cold this year.  But under 3 feet of cover, I'm not sure it will affect the grass.

Calling @wils5150 !  wils5150 is a course superintendent.  He may be able to answer our questions.

Bottom line is I don't think courses won't be opening until April.
