Hi All,

I'mt not a great golfer but just trying to get into it more. I'm actually going to start off by playing some par 3 courses because they are low cost and there are nice ones near me. Anyway, I am looking for a used iron set and am deciding between two used sets. They are roughly the same price but the Cleveland Mashie set is in "good" condition vs "average" condition according to callaway preowned. They claim both good and average clubs dont' have any problems that affect actual play. The mashie is only 6-pw, the S2s are 4-PW.

Mashie: http://www.callawaygolfpreowned.com/cleveland-2012-mashie-irons-2012/cleveland-2012-mashie-irons-2012,default,pd.html

S2: http://www.callawaygolfpreowned.com/cobra-s2-irons-2009/cobra-s2-irons-2009,default,pd.html#view=inventory

Any thoughts on which are a better buy? Thanks!

Ben

Do you currently hit your longer irons like a 5 or 4? If you don't and are going to get hybrids to fit that gap, then the extra clubs in the Cobra are superfluous.

Dom's Sticks:

Callaway X-24 10.5° Driver, Callaway Big Bertha 15° wood, Callaway XR 19° hybrid, Callaway X-24 24° hybrid, Callaway X-24 5i-9i, PING Glide PW 47°/12°, Cleveland REG 588 52°/08°, Callaway Mack Daddy PM Grind 56°/13°, 60°/10°, Odyssey Versa Jailbird putter w/SuperStroke Slim 3.0 grip, Callaway Chev Stand Bag, Titleist Pro-V1x ball

Absolutely agree, that's a good point. I'm unlikely to use the 5 or 4 much, if at all.  I'll probably use a hybrid at those distances.  The extra clubs are likely superfluous. That being said, they're still roughly the same price. The S2s are older but from what I've seen have very good reviews.  I just don't know much about the Mashies and was wondering if anyone could help decide between the two.

I tried to find the Maltby Playability Factor ratings of them but failed in a cursory search on my phone. That might be something to look at. If I were spitballing, I'd say the Mashies look incredibly forgiving and easy to hit with those super thick soles and are 3 model years newer. You should know that the Cobras are graphite shafts. That could be a plus or a minus for you: they're lighter and tend to get the ball up a bit higher, but the very general rule of thumb is they're for players with slower swings like older guys or women.

I'll edit to say I noticed the Cobras are stiff flex. I gotta say, other than price, this is a pretty apples-to-oranges comparison.

Based on Golf Digest, the Cobras are Game Improvement, the Clevelands are Super Game Improvement. So basically what I thought from looking at them. Clevelands are gonna give you a bit more help than the Cobras, but are gonna be a lot chunkier, I'd bet. Then there's the flex and shaft differences.

fair enough, sorry for my ignorance.  My swing speed is pretty fast and I'm a 28 year old 6' guy so I think the mashies probably make more sense for me.  What do you mean by "clunkier" though? Less ability to refine shots? If that's the case probably a nonfactor for me - I'm not good enough.

Clunkier, meaning the look of the irons top line especially are much bigger/ clunkier than a GI or blade iron, which usually have thinner top lines.

Not clunky, just chunky. As in, looking down, you'll see a very thick top line and maybe the back of the club sticking out. Some would call that confidence-inspiring, others would say it just doesn't look right. On the other end, think of a player's iron, like a muscleback iron. Looking down, it looks like a thin sliver of metal. Some would call that workable and classic looking, others would call it difficult to hit or scary.

Your age, height profile, and handicap match me very closely. I wouldn't play either of these clubs. I don't think either is a club you grow into. You have a handicap, so you've played before, and pretty decently. You should ask yourself whether you like a bunch of offset (helps promote a less closed clubface / frames the ball), do you like a thin top line or does it not matter at all? I play a set from Callaway that was a Costco-only offering, basically a slightly cheaper and repackaged version of their X-24 Hot irons (it's just called X-24). It has a quite a bit of offset, but the top line isn't too think, and the sole is wide enough to help, but not so wide you feel it won't go into the ground correctly. And it's shiny Chrome, which I like.

I poked around Callaway Preowned, and one that pops right away is the Callaway X-Hot. In average condition, 6-PW, SW, it's $155. That's a much better bet than the two you listed. I'm sure you can find similar deals online elsewhere, maybe ebay, but that would be the kind of club that I think you might want to look at. Only 2 years prior, that was their top of the line game improvement set, so it's modern, has nice visual appeal in my view, and you can buy single irons as needed later on if you decide to expand your set with a 5 or 4 iron. At the least, if you look at this, I would put this at sort of the in-between of the chunkiness of the Mashie versus an intimidating player's-style iron, so you have an idea of what I mean in terms of looks. Well reviewed, too. It's just a for-instance, though

Looking on ebay, I also found these, which are pretty respectable at this price:

Editing of that post ended before I could finish rewriting it:

Looking on ebay, I also found these, which are decent at this price. Can't speak to the condition; it's hard to tell from the pictures

The more I look, the Callaways at that price are a solid bet. Callaway Preowned is pretty stingy with its grading, so what they call average, often turns out to be pretty good. It's a good starting point if you decide to go down a different route from the two sets you posted originally.

I appreciate both the clarifications so no worries. So your general feeling is the sets I posted are a bit too geared towards beginners?

I wouldn't necessarily say towards beginners as much as I would say that they're geared towards players who need specific help, if that makes sense. I think the sets would fit older golfers who don't swing as hard and need help getting the ball elevated, especially the Mashie. The Cobra is graphite but stiff, so maybe the golfer who has a quick tempo but doesn't have the strength to swing the heavier steel shafts anymore. I'm spitballing a bit. In any event, I think they're clubs you'd grow out of rather than into, considering your situation.

For what it's worth, Callaway Preowned is having a sale this weekend through tomorrow, which is why I think the prices are as good as they are, on all the sets linked to on their site.

OK, that makes sense.  Probably not really where I'm looking for help in my game.  I know the sale is ending tomorrow that's why I was trying to make a decision.  It seems like there should be good deals on craigslist, especially because I'm in a big city, but it sure seems like people overvalue their clubs comparing prices on craigslist to ebay.  Anyway, thanks for your help

No worries. With craigslist, I think there's some expectation of haggling that is built into the prices from what I've heard from others on here who have gone the craigslist route.

Be sure to check out the PGA.com Value Guide as a reference. It's sort of a blue book for golf club prices. You can use that as an anchor point for haggling and getting an idea of what a decent deal is.

In any event, let us know what route you wind up going. I'd be interested to know. Good luck!

Super Game Improvement clubs are more geared towards beginners and high handicappers. Game Improvement clubs can be used by even really good players. Case in point, I have a friend that's 3.7 HC and plays older Callaway X 18's, which is a G.I. iron.

Another thing about buying used club's, especially irons is, ask about lie and length, as some people who get fitted may have had the irons bent upright, or flat, and may have added length, or  had the shafts shortened. I bought a set of really nice irons, only to find out they were 2 degrees flat, when I needed a standard lie. To adjust them runs about 18.00 a club.

Also, check out Global Golf, they sell used clubs, and what they say is good cond, is usually much better, my Son and I have bought a bunch of clubs from them, and have been very happy. Also, they are a sponsor here.
