Hey guys,

Brand new member on this site.

I am an 18 handicapper that golfs a lot but I still am an 18.

I have been playing with a set of VERY unforgiving TM MC's over the past couple years and just bought a used set of Mizuno JPX-825 pros'. I have been playing with the MC's and i got fitted with True Tempr GS95 shafts cut to +1". I like the way they feel but just want something that helps a little. The used clubs(mizuno JPX-825 pro's) are coming in with Nippon N.S. Pro 1150 Tour Steel shafts.

How do you think my old shafts(GS95) will compare to my new ones(NS 1150). Should I get a shaft extender and just make the NS pro shafts +1" or will it be noticeably different and just cause more problems with my game this spring? Or should I have someone just change out the shafts?

Thanks for any help you might have.

Glad I stumbled onto this site. Looks like fun.

Welcome to this site. You'll get lots of great information here.

Lengthening a shaft with an extender or plug will change its characteristics quite a bit, and I am wondering if you can tell the difference between the two shaft types versus the additional length?

@WUTiger should be able to help.

@Willcz

Have you checked the "lie" of the clubs?

Pulling the shafts if you like them, is easy.

Extending the shafts an inch will change a few characteristics and feel.

Are you comfortable with "stiff shafts?"

Another thought would be not to use "extenders" and purchase two new shafts for the longer irons.

Use the 9 or 8 iron in the wedge and step the progress with each iron.

Note: both shafts models are available in both Parallel and Taper tips; also both shafts varieties are sold as kits, pre-tipped in half-inch increments.

Description on GS-95 from GolfWorks site: " The True Temper GS-95 steel iron shaft features an innovative Speed Step Design that increases initial launch angle and maximizes peak trajectory." (also talks of light weight, and "graphite-like feel..."

Description on NS Pro 1150GH from GolfWorks: "Features adjusted wall thickness construction in butt and tip end for slight shaft counterbalance." (Designed for harder swingers)

Here's the specs on both from GolfWorks:

It seems to me the GS-95 shafts on TM MC irons is an odd combination. The MC (Muscle Cavity) are a Player's iron with touch of forgiveness.

I got a good workout with the JPX-825 Pros and the 825 standard about a year ago. I liked the Pros better, but the Mizuno man said I would probably be happier with the standard 825. The 1150GH Stiff (softstepped) was one of the recommended shafts. FYI, my clubhead speed for their 6i that day was 79 MPH.

As for lengthening the shaft, you should probably get a fitting before doing this. Get on the launch monitor with the 825Ps when the arrive and see what the numbers say. Stock length for the 5i in both MC and 825 Pro is 37.75". This is about 1/4" less than average for most industry stock iron sets for men.

And as ClubRat said, are you...

  • comfortable with stiff shafts?
  • have you checked the lie angle? Sometimes adjusting the lie can do more for square hits than extending the shafts.

If you lengthen the shaft 1", this will increase the swingweight by +4 points.

Focus, connect and follow through!

    • However, have you ever considered using small summer houses for such setups? They offer a great solution for creating dedicated practice areas, especially for an affluent audience looking to enhance their outdoor living space.
    • I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.
