Is there anything you guys do, besides wearing gloves, to avoid blisters? I have been out 3 times this month and each time I get a blister on my non glove hand by about hole 6 and then I need to wear 2 gloves. The blisters are in different places too. My index finger, pinky finger, etc. I personally do not like any gloves as I like the feel of the grip in my hand. Any recs? Will my hands just toughen up?

Early in the season I wear gloves on both hands along with tape or band-aids on the pressure points.  You may find them just as uncomfortable as gloves, but they make "athletic" band-aids which have a fair amount of stretch in them.  By mid-season I am still wearing one glove but with band-aids on both hands at the range.  It comes from not using the clubs for at least 3 months and not doing much in way of manual labor with my hands.  Give the athletic band aids a try and see if they help.

Thanks. Tape may be my best option when I start getting a blister to play out the rest of the holes without needing my 2nd glove. I do have the 2nd glove though just in case.

Just a thought here. Blisters are caused by friction. It just might be that you are gripping your clubs too tightly. Maybe using a lighter grip might help. Gripping the club with less pressure might even improve your game.

Ive got a winn dri tac on my driver and stock grips on my irons/putter. Not sure which clubs are causing the problem either.

Okay so the issue probably isn't your grips. I would check out this thread to make sure the grip is "secure" in your hands.

I went to a pro about my constant early season blistering and he basically said that I was watching Fred Couples' swing too much and that my grip was so loose that the club moved in my hands causing the irritation.  However, I still need the tape early season.

By the way, I use the tape before a blister can start since once they are created it is too late.

Or you can use superglue proactively before you get blisters.

Back in the old days Couples slathered superglue on his hands, one way that you don't need a glove. Don't know if he still uses it a lot but I assume so.

Try carrying a tube of superglue in your bag, it comes in handy for a lot of things and sets really fast.

I'm actually going to suggest that the opposite is true. If you're not going firmly enough the grip will slip around causing the friction that creates blisters.

Thanks, I never realized Couples used superglue to prevent blisters - just may try it.

Seems unlikely that the putter is causing blisters on your hands.  Most probably the club (s) which have the greatest speed and tend to fly out of your hand is the one to examine first.

Many golfers get bloody hands.  And often the blisters came before the blood.

Try a different or better quality glove.

Also, make sure the glove is the proper fit.

I've tried synthetic gloves and there not for me.

Some have various materials sewn into the fingers which have two seams on each side of the fingers.

The seams often cause abrasion at the knuckles.

I keep hydrocortisone cream in the bag because its useful for a variety of skin issues, bug bites, bleeding, discomfort and finger or fingernail pain. I would say the grip is wrong, to hard and possibly reacting to a change of plane or direction as you swing. A lesson to have someone look over the details might be real useful.

  • 1 month later...

I'm looking for a good athletic tape or band-aid for my right hand trigger finger. I was messing around with the vardon grip today and I got a nice sized blister going.

Any ideas on brand? Type?

J&J; makes a "Sport" Band Aid that provides some extra cushion.  This time of year I look like a boxer as I use 10 pieces of regular first aid adhesive tape as my fingers toughen up after a 5 month layoff.  I have been told by different PGA teaching pros that I grip the club too tight or too loose.  I have stopped trying to analyze it and accept the fact I do not do physical labor with my hands and they lose their callous during the long off season.  I also wear a glove on both hands for the first 5 - 10 rounds.

If you already have a blister that is open and hurts, there is a product called "Thin Skin" that you can cover the torn skin with (it does sting a little).  Then tape it up after it dries and definitely wear a glove on the blistered hand.

I don't know if it's the difference in how you grip the club, or how hard you swing, or a combination of things, but even after a 16 month layoff a couple of years ago, then playing 7 days straight, I never got a single blister.  Sore body from unused muscles, yeah, but no blisters.  I've never gotten a blister from golf in my life.  I use a neutral grip and I think that I grip fairly lightly.

I've read various comments from some pretty good instructors (Harvey Penick is one) that blisters come from an improper grip, but I've known some pretty good players who still got the occasional blister, so if they had a poor grip, they must have been doing something else even more right to compensate for it. :smartass:

    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
    • Day 96 (18 Mar 24) - Continued work with the Divot Board with the GW and hard foam balls.  Focused on small target/small miss…setup to hit target about 30yds out - success if it hit within 6’ circle of target, fail if outside.  Had decent success averaging about 3 out of 4 (hitting in groups of four).

    • I'm relieved someone finally defined hiking. I was giddy when I saw these new TPI videos a day or so after they dropped. Very easy to understand the problem and solution the way they have presented it. Been working on fixing this for about a year and a half now. It's nice to be able to call it something so communication becomes easy.  I was working on more lateral and up too, but just having someone define it clearly in video form was so helpful for me to continue confidently with what I thought was wrong and how I had to fix it.  My conceptual error here was just trying to rotate like a tour pro but without including the necessary forward pressure/weight shift associated with enough lateral and upward motion of the pelvis.  This video is great too, as is Greg Rose.
    • Day 2.    couple mins of rolling putts end over end.    10 mins of Slow, mirror work, working on starting the downswing and impact wrist positions. Hit a couple balls into the net after.    Then finished with a couple chips to see if I could repeat what I worked on yesterday.
