I have been taking lessons during the winter season on LI. I have had my grip, turn, and posture corrected. With regards to posture I can't seem to grasp the concept of get taller. I apparently lean over too much. Any advice on how to get taller at set up? Thanks

Practice your set up and takeaway in front of a mirror.  You will get a sense of the correct posture and get used to the new feeling.

I had an issue of my head dropping when my arms got to the top of the backswing.  I used mirror practice to eliminate it.

I would say post a picture of your set up. Hard to really tell if you are too tall or not.

Just as some examples. Probably the two most neutral set up positions in the game. Just athletic postures, Rory and Tiger.

Just some key points.

1) No arch in lower back

2) Upper back is not pulled back, so the shoulder blades are relaxed

3) head is down a bit so they are not looking down at the ball down the bridge of their nose so to speak.

4) slight knee flex.

Given postures can vary. PGA Tour players have a lot of different postures. Fred Couples had a more upright posture compared to these two.

If you are having trouble with a lot of knee flex, a lot of bending over at the waist. I would say you might want to feel more of a stretch in the hamstrings and feel like your butt isn't sticking out as much. When I try to get into a posture that is bent over too much I feel a bit more arch in the back, a lot more pressure in the thighs to hold the weight and my butt is sticking out more.

Thank you for the replies. Boogie may I ask what specifically you would practice to eliminate your head from dropping. I am still working with just irons right now to get the basic grip and turn right so those pics of posture while helpful just don't register as far as what I look like with a 7 iron. I will try to get a pic up. Thanks

For me, I worked with the feel of having my right side stretch up at the top of the backswing.  This was shown by Dave Wedzik in the 5 Simple Keys videos.  There may be a reference in the 5SK video thread for Key 1, steady head.

My back swing was too long for my shoulder turn.  As I was coming to the top of the back swing, A4, I was dropping my left shoulder, pulling my head down at the same time while trying to get the back swing further. This caused me to have to compensate on the downswing so I wouldn't hit it heavy behind the ball.

I used a kind of funny swing thought to help with this, "tall in the saddle".   I still use it when I regress on the course.  The mirror work does a great job of showing you this and where the real top of your backswing should be.  Video helps a lot too.

Thanks again for the reply boogie. I will have to check out the 5 keys video. It is odd that my instructor wants me to stick my butt out more and keep my chin up. My head definitely drops on my back swing.

Do yourself the favor of finding a new instructor.

No need to show him that. Just ask yourself how many of those guys are sticking their butts out and lifting their chins up.

I have 2 more lessons in the package. In your expert opinion iacas is it possible to take the grip and turn my current instructor helped me with and marry it with a new instructor for setup and take away? I have been on this site for a few years now and have seen a few of the 5 keys videos you post. It does seem that besides the grip and shoulder turn everything else seems to be different. I rememeber thinking when he said chin up and butt out that it goes against what I have read and to be honest seems to limit how my body turns. He also has my ball position with my 7 iron to be right of center

Yep. Look at some pictures on your computer to see what's correct, like pictures from the thread @iacas linked to, and get in front of a mirror. Get in the same posture as those pros in the pics and get used to that feeling. Will help a ton of things.

I can't speak for @iacas but "chin up, butt out" is a red flag for a bad instructor. That's the exact opposite of what good golf posture generally looks like.

A good instructor will start with your biggest issue (your priority piece) and that's all you two will work on. You won't need to think or worry about anything else.

I suggest starting a My Swing Thread so you can get an idea of what good golf instruction is like. Plus, it's a fun way to get more involved in the community here, chat with some knowledgable people about your swing, etc. I know it's helped me a lot.

Thank you all for the responses and link to other post. I will try to get a video up or at very least a pic of me at setup. Just out of curiousity why if it is so bad would a teaching pro promote ass out chin up?

Holy cow, I'm doing the EXACT same thing... I don't want to thread jack, so can we pm about this? I'd like to pick your brain a little.

I have no idea where it came from, but it's the same crap that's spewed from the golf magazines every month. They promote shoulder planes that are far too flat.

Not really sure, maybe it came from some player describing what they feel. Obviously your instructor and many others don't think it's bad information, the reason they typically give is that they think it gives your left shoulder more room to turn. Having an arch in your lower back only limits your ability to turn and having the chin up effects your how you view the ball and your ability to keep your head steady. Take a look at that thread Erik shared, not going to find many hall of famers with their butt out and chin up.

Here's another way to look at it. You don't see any good player that's "tall" at impact, they all look similar to the right pic, round torsos. So if that's where we want to be at impact, why start somewhere where we have to make a significant change?

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
