Mods, if this rambling is in the wrong forum then you know the drill....

A couple of weeks ago I decided to grab 3 drivers and hit against a screen.  It was -3 degrees outside so it was a good excuse to do something golf related.  Putting in the living room gets pretty boring.  I haven't taken any full swings in probably 3 months so I wasn't expecting much.  What I really want to say is I knew I would be rusty and did not want to blow something out in the process.  I just mainly wanted to see if there was any noticeable difference in the distance that would show up on the monitor and swap the shafts around in two of the clubs.  I took a Maxfli C3 10.5 loft with UST V2 regular shaft.  The other two clubs were Nike Covert Tour and Covert 2.0 both set to 10.5 loft with both set to neutral on the Flexloft.  The Covert 2.0 had the stock Kuro Kage black 50g flex R and the Covert Tour had a stock Kuro Kage silver 60g flex S.  I played with Maxfli for about 2 months then had a 4 year layoff.  I used the Covert 2.0 the last month of the season.  I thought I had a little more control of that club than the Maxfli.  The Covert Tour was bought for next to nothing but I made a mistake because I wanted it with the regular shaft.  I think I might have hit 3 foam balls with it in front of the house so I had no idea what to expect with a real golf ball and stiff shaft.  I was not sure what balls were there at the simulator so I took a Maxfli U/6 LC and a Wilson 50/50 yellow.  I usually use the Wilson 50/50, Smartcores, Revolutions that are cheap to hit into the woods from time to time.  I noticed the U/6 LC felt better and had better yardage to so I stayed with that for this little session.  Oh, the balls and clubs were nice and warm from being in the house and a nice and warm vehicle.

The first 10 or 15 swings were with the Maxfli C3 to just warmup so to speak.  I should learn to do stretching beforehand but that is for another day.  I did not even look at the screen for numbers in those swings but did see my ball flight was just left of center.  I thought that was odd because I fade them (righty) on the course.  If I really crank on them then it gets into big slices.  So maybe the layoff helped my swing in that regard.

I then took about 10 swings at a faster pace and what I thought was a normal out on the course type.  I only was getting 185-195 yards and the ball was landing just left of center.  They felt solid on contact but I could feel some whippyness.  I think the ball speed was only reading about 125 to 128 in those swings.  I never knew what my driver club head or ball speeds were before but that doesn't sound too good.  I did take a few test swings last fall with a 6 iron and the club head speed was 75-78 mph.  I was in the later stages of lower back troubles at that time so those numbers were probably a little low.  I probably should not have been swinging a club but was in a pissed off state because it was cutting my already short season down some more.

Next up was the Covert 2.0 and the yardage immediately dropped to 175 to 180 with the same ball flight and ball speeds.  My disappointment was already taking a beating and then have this happen.  Again, the contact felt solid except one that I knew was on the toe.  I did notice the club had a dead feeling to it.

Next up was the Covert Tour.  I was expecting a disaster with the smaller head, stiffer shaft, and a left shoulder that was starting to burn along with pain shooting through my left leg on every swing.  The first swing was followed with a very loud smack.  I started getting 228, 225, 224, 237, 232, 239 for yardage.  The same ball flight and just left of center.  I noticed a 139 mph ball speed on one of the swings along with a 17 launch.  That launch seems pretty high to me.  Is it way above normal?

I went back to the Maxfli C3 and the yardage hovered around the 200 mark.  The Covert 2.0 was in the 190 range.  Same ball flights, lower ball speeds, same club feel, and really dead sounding 2.0.  What the hell?

I tried the Covert Tour again and the yardages jumped back up to the high 120's but I was starting to peter out so I called it a day.  In my haste, like an idiot I forgot to swap out the Kuro Kage shafts or move the loft settings around.

I guess all this might seem like a mishmash of info but it's still cold outside and I haven't hit since then.  I would like to get a shaft fitting but do not want to be pushed into buying a club or hitting with a different club.  I have no idea who has shafts with Nike FlexLoft tips in them that could be tested out.  I would like the shaft to be in the club I have.  I'm in the Northeastern PA area and do not know of any Nike fitting places in these parts.  Not unless somebody knows of a good combination on the equipment side of the equation.  I still scour eBay because sometimes nobody bids for whatever reason and you are basically stealing the item.

I am skeptical on the low yardages, shots to the left side of the fairway, and why that damn Covert 2.0 that I used last fall was stinking up the place.

This past Monday I got to hit for an hour inside a dome.  The ceiling is over 65 ft. tall and the end wall is 126 yards away.  It was really nice to see the ball flight instead of watching some movie screen.  I told myself that I wasn't going to just go in there and whack away for an hour with no purpose.  I told the other 3 guys I met up with that I wasn't there to hit as many balls as the hour would allow.  I have done that at the outdoor range and nothing is gained after working up a sweat and getting hot under the collar.  I also did not hit any of from the low cut carpet, I hate that stuff.  All the wedges, irons, hybrids, and fairway woods were hit off from the simulated grass.  I only hit about 8 with the driver because my lane had one of those really short rubber tees.  I hit a SW, GW, and PW for about 15 minutes to let me warm up and concentrate on the little things like grip, posture, ball position, takeaway, etc.  I never did hit one into the little net that was setup about 30 yards away but was keeping them pretty darn close.  All of that made for a very pleasant outing.  I think in all that time, I probably only hit 10 balls that I would label as bad shots.  I brought all the clubs but only hit driver, 3W, 3H, 4i, PW, GW, and SW.  This is the first time I have ever hit a 4 iron and I might just put that in the bag instead of the 4H.  Those babies came out like rockets and were bee lining straight as can be.  I'm sure hitting off the real deck will make me come crashing back to Earth.

One of the guys complimented me at work today.  He said he was impressed with the repeated swings and ball flights.  I will have to get back down there a few more times before the month is out.  It's too bad the place is an hour and a half away.  Two of them only live 5 minutes away.  I'd go broke if that was in my back yard.

    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
    • Day 96 (18 Mar 24) - Continued work with the Divot Board with the GW and hard foam balls.  Focused on small target/small miss…setup to hit target about 30yds out - success if it hit within 6’ circle of target, fail if outside.  Had decent success averaging about 3 out of 4 (hitting in groups of four).

    • I'm relieved someone finally defined hiking. I was giddy when I saw these new TPI videos a day or so after they dropped. Very easy to understand the problem and solution the way they have presented it. Been working on fixing this for about a year and a half now. It's nice to be able to call it something so communication becomes easy.  I was working on more lateral and up too, but just having someone define it clearly in video form was so helpful for me to continue confidently with what I thought was wrong and how I had to fix it.  My conceptual error here was just trying to rotate like a tour pro but without including the necessary forward pressure/weight shift associated with enough lateral and upward motion of the pelvis.  This video is great too, as is Greg Rose.
    • Day 2.    couple mins of rolling putts end over end.    10 mins of Slow, mirror work, working on starting the downswing and impact wrist positions. Hit a couple balls into the net after.    Then finished with a couple chips to see if I could repeat what I worked on yesterday.
