What are my chances of getting to scratch in a year?

I have played golf ever since I was a little kid and it was the first sport I played but I also always played basketball and year round baseball so golf was just to play a few times a year with my dad and then when I got to high school I completely stopped playing golf. Well I am a junior now and I quit baseball in the fall after winning 2 Jv mvps and a ton of hard work and a guaranteed varsity utility infield spot and I decided to get back into golf. I came back from a few trips in January and bought some nice new clubs and in the last 2 months I have gone from a consistent 100-120 player to mid 90's and I shot my first 89 yesterday. I am very athletic (5'11, 175) and practice 4-7 times a week and during the summer I will be practicing even more. I also live in south Texas so I can practice year round and have access to a course that is 5 minutes from my house. I have also started taking lessons from a top 100 coach in the world and will be going to him once or twice a month. I drive the ball 230-300 depending on the day and I consider my iron play to be my strong suit, putting and chipping are really on and off but I am never amazing and usually never awful.

So after all that what are my chances of being a scratch golfer or a sub 5 handicap golfer by my senior year of golf next year? Also I could use some advice or some tips from anyone on how to improve faster or just some general tips on anything!

Thanks in advance to anyone that replies!

Welcome to the site, and I'm glad your back into golf.. If I could do it all over again I would have taken it up in high school instead of soccer, but better late than never.. Enough about me though.. What your trying to do is not going to be easy, and I'm not entirely sure is even possible. However, if I were to give you advice I would say: Make sure you are not working on more than one thing at a time.. It can get messy trying to fix multiple issues at once. Since you are going to be working with a coach, I would suggest keeping some sort of diary on what you are working on and your progress. May I suggest you start a my swing thread on this site, and you will get insightful tips and hints as to how you are doing and what you can do to improve? At the same time you can use it to track everything you have done and be able to go back to it any time. Don't get too disappointed if you don't make your goal or don't see immediate improvement.. If you learn to enjoy the process of getting better you will be able to put things in perspective and always be taking strides towards your goal.. Instead of getting frustrated and quitting in the middle. Welcome again and good luck!

Scratch seems unlikely but a 5 might be possible.

My best tip is never listen to tips.  You say you have a top 100 teacher.  If you have confidence in him why would you need tips from random anonymous people on a discussion board?

But welcome to the board and good luck with reaching your goal.  While very very challenging it is at least a lot more realistic than some of the folks who come here with lofty delusions.  Your goal sounds more like an aspiration than a delusion.  Which is a good thing.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Thank you for the replies and ya I think I will make a plan pretty soon! And why not get all the advice that you can get? My coach may not teach me everything so why not have other suggest stuff!

Since you are in school you can play and practice a lot, so I'd say a 5 is very reasonable, dunno about scratch. I topped out before that when I was still in school.

If you don't have one already, either find a buddy of comparable skill who is as committed as you, or find a buddy already a 5 or better to play with.  Playing with better players is a huge deal. Having someone to compete with is a big deal.

Good luck. You are at a time in your life when you can legitimately find out how good you can get. Have fun!

Thanks for the reply! Ya my friend is the captain of the team and he helped convinced me to get back and play and we play on the weekends and practice together a fair amount. He is a D1 commit and shoots under par most of the time and I learn a lot from him so that is pretty awesome.

Because too many cooks spoil the broth.  And at this stage you do not know the difference between good tips and bad tips (just because the guy giving you a tip is a good golfer doesn't mean it is a good tip).  You need focus and a plan and random tips from anonymous people is not a great way to be focused.  If you want to do a little extra, make a swing thread and the real experts here (Erik, Mike, and a couple of others) will give you a second opinion.  But running around looking for tips from everyone will just diffuse your focus and probably your progress, IMO.

Good luck!

Chance - Very remote to do it in a year.

Advice - Don't set yourself up with an unrealistic goal - see Chance above.  Lack of progress against it can get you derail before you gave it all.    Figure out what is a realistic goal and keep at it.  Enjoy the journey.
