Hey, it could be worse, like the tail end of a scorpion. Here I am, rock you like a hurricane. This here's the real "Snake Pit", Innisbrook is for wimps. :-)

How weird is this? Is it just a snakes head that someone put in there?

As someone who cut hundreds of holes in his summer of working at a golf course (like probably many here) there is no room down there for a snake to go down there then curl up and stick its head out, maybe a 8 inch garter snake but that's it. You can even see the dirt under the bottom of the cup liner.

And that's a big snake head.

Very strange :-)

Yeah, I'm going to assume this is some sort of prank. Somebody likely killed the snake with a shovel and figured this would be a funny way to dispose of the head.

Setup or not, that thing has to die!

I'm guessing that it's Photoshopped, so it never was alive in that spot.

Wonder what the R&A;/USGA ruling is on this? :-D

We have Adders over here and they can give you a nasty bite if you play heathland courses. Played Bradley Hall Halifax last year, my brother in law teas up his last mint PRO V1 and blazes it into the heather. He's just about to reach in a grab it and i say "theres Adders on this course" he replies "didnt like that ball anyway!"

I saw my first live rattlesnake of the year last night driving back from Vegas. For the next several months I will be more careful where I step, and/or put my hands. Pretty sure I will walk by more than a few of these critters with out knowing it. This pict is photo shopped too.

I've lived in the west for more than 40 years and never seen a live rattlesnake.  I've hiked along the Front Range hogback where the plains meet the mountains, and where they are supposed be everywhere, yet I've never seen one.  I've seen bull snakes and garter snakes galore, but never a venomous snake of any kind outside of the reptile house at a zoo.  One time many years ago we had to drive a 5 foot bull snake off the 2nd green.  It was camped out around the hole, as if it thought that it was a gopher or prairie dog hole and put up quite a fight over it.

I ran into a huge rattler last year at home course.   I was taking a short cut through deep rough to a tee box and heard a rattling sound.   Until then, I never heard the sound before but I immediately knew it was a rattler and stopped dead on a track.  The sound was surprisingly loud and clear, enough to "warn" any intruder.    When I looked up, there was a rattler all coiled up to strike about 2 yards away.   One more step, the snake would have struck.   I immediately made a huge detour.

In the same week, I saw a small rattler in a bunker.   I could not blame my wife for not playing out of it :-) .   Marshall was called and as we were leaving to the next tee box, they were trying to move it to a safer place with a broom stick or rather.

More recently, I saw a baby snake near a hole.   As I was getting ready to putt, I saw it and thought it was a worm.   When I picked it up, I noticed the harder scale (vs worm skin) and sure enough, it was a tiny snake and not a huge worm.

Rattler in the greenside bunker with my ball = +3 strokes and move onto the next hole - the number of strokes I'd reasonably take to finish the hole. I'm outta there.

Chances are you probably walked by more than a few with out knowing it. Not all rattlers actually rattle a warning unless they feel they are in harms way. I have a good friend who is a

Ophiologist (?) (specializes in snakes) in Southern Nevada. He told me as humans, we are too big to eat, so snakes don't want to waste their time, or venom on us. Now, if you step on one, or otherwise get close enough to piss one off you will most likely will be bitten. We are seeing them on the road right now because the asphalt retains, and gives off heat which they use. He says Southern Nevada has a very healthy population of various types of rattle snakes. I have seen three crawling around out here where I live. One was a 4' western diamondback that I did not see until I had walked past it. I was out walking my dogs, and they didn't even notice it until it started crawling a way. Most snake bites out here are from people messing with the snake, stepping on one, or blindly putting their hand on one. I have lived in Southern Nevada for over 60 years, and have hike all over the area. Except for the numerous ones I have seen on the highway, I have only seen 4 rattlers while hiking. Two of those were two years ago. .

It's a real snake folks. Dude is not workin' that Photoshop, mkay? :-D

Martinez says it was actually one of his workers that took the photo, but it was he that later tweeted the photo out from his personal account . Some people in the golf business saw the photo and then various golf news outlets found it and soon even the Golf Channel was asking Martinez about the find.

Martinez says his employee found the snake, coiled up under the bottom of the cup. Had the snake not been found it could have made for interesting and painful morning for a member.

“We see snakes all the time on the course but never one caught under the cup. Sometimes we found dead ones in the cups though,” says Martinez, who is deathly afraid of snakes.

The three-foot snake was placed, live and well, near a local water hazard, away from the usual paths members take.

Officially, the snake season has begun at my course.   We saw one (about 4 - 5 feet one) lying across a cart path this weekend and had to maneuver our cart to avoid running over it. I have pretty much given up looking for balls in tall grass in fear of the snakes.   Can't hit it out of 10 inch deep grass anyway even if I find it.

Last summer I hit an errant shot off from a 153 yard par 3.  I seen where the ball landed and is was really thick grass.  I get down there and walk around for a minute before I see what looks like a ball.  Wouldn't you know it would be laying right under a dead snake.  The thing was laying belly up.  Startled me for a second then I stepped back to gather my thoughts and let the goose bumps settle down.  I moved the snake out of the way with the wedge and proceeded to get a good whack out of that stuff and landed it in the bunker next to the green.

I have learned to use a club to go poking around when my drives catch the edges of the woods.  If they go too far in, cya.  I might have to take a better look in the cup when pulling out the flag or reaching to get a ball.  Does this mean those ball picker uppers on the end of the putters will be making a comeback?

Fake or not, I would never trust a cup on that course again.

I still find this hard to believe.  I never saw a hole cut that much deeper than what is needed to set the insert, and I never saw one with the socket for the flagstick that big around.  That is a large snake in the photo, and something about it just doesn't look right.

    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
    • Hello, I've been playing a Teardrop td17 F.C. putter for many years and love it. It still putts and feels as good or  better than any of the new putters I've tried and it's in excellent condition except the face has dings in it ever since I bought it used that kind of bother me. I was just wondering if it's possible to have some really shallow horizontal grooves milled into the face on a "roll face" putter. I think I would rather spend some money on it instead of trying to get used to a new putter.  Thanks
    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.
