i bought a forged mizuno t zoid 6 iron to practice with. i understand if you play cavitybacks/game improvement irons that practiceing with a blade can really help you r ball striking more crisp. im hoping to improve before stepping up to a players set of irons in the next couple of years. have any of you ever tried this approach, practicing with a club beyond your skill level? i only paid $25 for it and it looks BRAND new so i thought it was a wise investment. any tips for range practice? your thoughts please.

I thought about purchasing a set of players clubs to practice with in order to improve my ball-stricking. My plan was to use my G5's during rounds and practice with the blades at the range. I figured it would be to complicated to switch back and forth all the time so I just sold my pings and bought some titleists.

It was rough at first making a change so dramatic but now that I look back I am glad I made the switch.

i took it to the range today and was humbled very quickly. the first several balls i teed up and hit beautifully. i love the way the forged blade feels and the the way it looks and swings and every thing about it until i started attempting to hit balls off the ground. wow i suck at ball striking. i had success on half swing shots but nothing on full swing shots. im gonna keep at it cause i really want mp-57 in a year or 2. the last 15 balls or so i hit with my old 6 iron, i couldnt hit it after swinging the mizuno. everything felt wrong with my old irons so it kind of feels like i took a step backwards but it only makes me want to improve so i can get gamers irons now.

I think blades are just costing you strokes. With a forged club the sweet spot is just...well, tiny and there's little to no forgiveness. If I ever want to humble my ballstriking ability, I just need to hit my buddy's forged MacGregor 1 iron from the 1960's. But it may be good for practice since it will be easier to tell when you hit the sweet spot than say, a slightly off-center hit.

I'd be a worse golfer today than I am if blades never existed and we were all forced to play Callaway or Ping shovels. Lack of forgiveness is a

good thing given the right mindset and approach, and if you're just using it for practice (OP), it could work out really well for you. Suffice to say this discussion has been held many, many times here on the forum, and you're going to find a lot of people who disagree with lamebums. Musclebacks have their purpose.

He bought

sounds like a good idea, i was going to get blades to play with exclusively(to make myself better, i'm only 14 and not concerned with competition, just improvement), but now i want to play for my high school team and won't be able to afford however, some of my local courses free rental clubs are blades, so i practice with those sometimes

As a forged player, I see forged irons as the ultimate game improvement club. They force you to improve. One word to the wise. Be careful of shaft weight. If the practice club has a shaft that is too heavy for you, it might get you into the habit of forcing the swing. What are the shaft weights in your irons? What's the weight of the shaft in this one?

i have no clue. my clevelands have the regular flex and this mizuno has s300 i think. how the crap do you hit blades off the turf? i chunked it a lot or hit it thin everytime. i tried slowing my swing down but that didnt help any. i hit it wonderfully off a tee but off hte ground was where it got ugly. im glad no one else was on the range.

LOL I was wondering the first thing when I first came across true blades. Basically, involves developing a better swing with fewer moving parts. Working on your balance would really help (as I've discovered helping novices who ended up buying muscle back blades because they looked good).

i tried it again today after hitting my cavity backs. much better success. i got the ball in teh air after some careful practice swings and a very focused real swing. i really like hitting this blade. now im really itching to get mp-57s earlier than expected. i need a little forgivness but i love the way these mizunos look and feel.
