Hi, guys! I was wondering what you guys like about the fame of golf versus the game of baseball. I grew up thinking baseball was so beautiful in green grass parks, but once I started following and playing golf, the courses won me over! I play golf for fun only, because I'm not very good. Ditto baseball. Haha. I was just curious how you'd compare these two sports and why you like golf better (assuming you do). Thanks

I don't think the two sports are at all very similar but I do enjoy playing both.

Golf is more enjoyable because 17 other players are not required. Then there's the whole age thing.

Having said that, I'll shag fly balls and take batting practice all day long if given the chance.

No need to compare.

They are different sports.

Can you explain why you like apples more than oranges?

In the race of life, always back self-interest. At least you know it's trying.

Don't let these knuckleheads discourage you from posting. With all the stupid #*^ that's posted (some of it by me and the other 3 who responded), I didn't think yours deserved this much crap. There are plenty of other threads/posts which compare golf with other sports on this forum.

There is a thread which may be better suited for this question:

http://thesandtrap.com/f/11/the-grill-room

But seeing as your question did involve golf, it seemed fine here (????). Anyway, welcome to the site.

The better scratch player on my kid's golf team is also on the varsity baseball team. He seems to enjoy playing both sports.

Personally, I didn't like all the spitting in baseball, that's kind of why I never really got into it. . .

I'm sorry, did I hurt your feelings Jason?

Nothings in a knot on my end, just letting the new guy know he's welcome here.

Baseball was my first love; I use to dream about playing second base for my Atlanta Braves. As much as I love golf, I think I'd trade a career in professional golf for one as an MLBer. I love both games a lot, though.

Baseball came very easy for me, plus it paid my way through college. :smartass: Win, or lose at baseball, and it was the team's win, or loss. Win, or lose at golf, and it's all on the person swinging the club. One person swings the golf club, and plays against mother nature in golf. In baseball it takes a minimum of 2 people to start, and end a play.

Only thing that each sport might have in common other than a ball, and maybe spikes, is swinging at, and hitting a ball that is low, and outside.

I have also golfed 18 holes using only a wooden baseball bat at fund raisers.

I loved the game of baseball until I took up golf which replaced it, and my bass boat. :-P

I am a junior in high school and recently quit baseball to pursue golf in my last 2 years of high school and I enjoy golf a lot more even though I like the sport of baseball better. Growing up I played 2-10 rounds of golf a year while playing over 100 baseball games a year (Travel ball in the south starting when I was 7). I finally got so burned out and bored of baseball and realized that I would only get the chance to play for D2 or super tiny D1 schools after several baseball camps last summer and it got super stressful. Baseball is all about the team and its always the teams fault so even if you play great and your team loses well that sucks while in golf it all comes down to you. No one else and I love that about golf and I really wished I would of started taking golf seriously at a younger age but I still enjoyed my glory days of baseball.

Interesting.  I quit baseball to pursue golf myself in college and that's a tough decision!  Like you, I loved baseball more.  I too experienced some burn out and started taking baseball too serious and lost some of the fun.  I started looking at potential not my love of sport to make my decision.  I had only played golf a few times when my HS baseball coach (who was also the golf coach) asked me to play for the school team because they needed players.  I just goofed off on the course really but picked the game up quickly.  I loved baseball and almost didn't want to play golf, but he won me over with the "You get two days out of school for the district tournament, 2 if you make regionals, and 2 more if you make state...  Yep, sign me up coach.  Ironically, in my first year and my fist high school tournament I went and shot 78 as a sophomore on a par 70 course and didn't understand how lucky and good that was lol...

In retrospect, I regret giving up baseball because I loved that game more at the time and should have played in college.  I didn't make the most of my college golf experience (my own immaturity) and now realize that I could play golf my whole life.  That said I made some good friendships and am glad I played a sport in school...  but your baseball time is limited.

Good Luck man.  It's a tough decision!  Just be sure to have fun in which ever you choose and remember why you love sports.

I used to play professional baseball for a couple years and that's when my love of golf blossomed as well. I began to appreciate golf because it made baseball feel easy, comparatively. Both sports can be ruthless when things aren't going well for you, but I have yet to encounter a mental challenge equal to golf.

The one significant problem with baseball for schleps like me is that after a certain point you have to be good to continue. I enjoyed baseball as a kid. Think fat first baseman who could hit. That wasn't going to be good enough to make the high school team, so that's where it ended.

    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
