Game Golf has added quite a few new features to their iPhone app...

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/game-golf-gps-tracker-rangefinder/id682389516?mt=8

It's now an on course GPS rangefinder, scorecard, and stat keeper.

I used it for my round today and was able to tag all my shots very similar to how you would with the classic Game Golf belt unit. I loved the UI as I found it very easy to select the club I was hitting. I could even edit the round right there on the course. It allowed me to drag a cursor around and get distances to different spots on the course. The app gave me distances to the front, middle, and center of the green for all approach shots.

Honestly I'm not sure I will use the old belt unit much, if at all, going forward. (Tournament rounds being the exception)

Interesting, thanks for sharing, @cedrictheo . I didn't know Game Golf had an iPhone app. Just another reason I'm going to have to switch to an iPhone this year.

You "tag" your club by selecting it on the screen as you're looking at the GPS rangefinder?

@billchao Yeah, super simple. You click a + icon on the bottom of the screen and then select your club...

I sort of can't tell: does this work completely independent of Game Golf? As in, if you don't have a unit at all?

It's not only for iPhone. If you go to the play store (Droids version of iTunes) and download the game golf app it has the play golf feature. It came in the last updated for the app.

@cedrictheo was using this while I stuck with the "tap" plan using the belt unit.

Honestly, I wonder about GG's business plan if they are going to allow the application to do all that the tagging belt unit does. Why? Because it's a free app.

The only downsides appear to be:

  • You have to carry your phone around with you. This matters a lot to me (battery life, hassle, where to put it so I don't sit on it, scrape it with a divot repair tool, make myself uncomfortable, etc.); maybe not to you.
  • It's not tournament legal. The belt unit is.
  • It's more of a hassle to use the app than to click and tag, though it provides more info (like other GPS apps for golf).

Excellent find @cedrictheo ! I wish you posted more. I have no idea why Game Golf would allow you to do this. Unless they plan to make this an in app purchase. I think I will stick to the tapping because I hate carrying around my phone and wouldn't want to bother during putting.

Yep. Weird. You don't need the club tags either? Very strange business decision, unless they're hoping people will love the concept but hate the need to carry the phone and pony up for the full unit. But then, why not do a trial version app? I'm gonna download the app before the CEO of game golf wakes up.

Downloading as I type.. This is so cool, it was a purchase I was going to make sometime in the near future, but why go through all that hassle if I can do it in my phone? Just make sure it's charged for the round and I'm good to go. I can at least test it out and see how it goes!

It looks really good.. I was able to create an account, put up an avatar picture and assign all of my clubs in my bag.. All the courses here are in the system already, so it looks like I'll have to just wait and try it out.. I can't wait to actually get some good data, next up is to start following people.. I am not sure why GG would do this, but I would venture to guess that they are trying to get a whole lot of people into their data base, and then maybe sell it off?? I don't know.

I gave a few reasons above. Maybe they don't matter to you. Maybe they do. I prefer tagging with the belt unit.

The only one that didn't matter to me was the tournament one.. The other ones I'm going to experience my self, and if I find that they are a hassle I will then strongly consider getting the full thing.. Being in KSA I doubt I'll be able to get it from around here, but maybe this is what they are counting on? People who don't have it, trying it out, liking the data and all the other stuff coming from it and getting tired of the hassle so they go for the tag system?

I agree with the worry about scratching the phone. I'm literally looking for a cheap iPhone 6 case now solely to use this app because I've gone casefree with this iPhone.

I think their biggest reason is trying to get more people into the ecosystem, having them socially active, etc, to drive them to the product for the simplicity of it eventually once they're hooked or to make it richer for people who do buy the product. Like, the guy who is the only one in his foursome with the Game Golf, now his friends can participate with him. Which may be reasonable, I dunno. I'll have to see how I like using the app. But I'm super intrigued.

I'm glad I hadn't jumped in on the unit when it was on sale for $119. I still may eventually if I feel the draw after the app, but I'd be pretty cheesed if they gave away the functionality for free after I'd paid the money. The app's features address almost all of the issues I had with the product that had me on the fence.

Not only that, I'm also a big fan of testing a functionality before dishing out cash too.. If I buy into GG I would then become a loyal customer.. Look at it this way, I wouldn't consider buying that other system at all now..(can't remember its name). So, their stunt helped bring me in if for just getting more stats into their data base like you alluded to.

GolfLogix does all this and IMO it was a PITA dragging out the phone before every shot. I will try the GG app but I don't expect it to be much easier to use.

I don't want to be pulling out gadgets and phones when I'm playing!... for the same reason I wouldn't use iron headcovers, I just want to hit, walk, & play golf, I tried a phone app before I got GG and they're a nuisance, same for range finders, I have gps watch for green distances, quick glance, take shot, tag club and I'm walking!

That's the thing; I check my GPS rangefinder almost as a matter of habit even if I'm next to a yardage marker. If my phone doubled as a rangefinder and game golf, I could see it being in the same compartment in my cart instead of the Garmin. I think its biggest drawback will be on the green when I'm away from the cart. That's where I imagine the unit shines.
