Hockey player turned golfer

Now trust me I know every part time golfer has dreamt of going pro at some point in their life, but I want your guys opinion on if I have a shot. I am 22 and have spent most of my life playing hockey in Canada. I played golf every once and a while growing up but no more than your regular athletic kid and never in tournaments of any sort. One summer when I was 19 my boss was a 27 year old oilfield worker who, out of high school, turned down scholarship offers to multiple d-1 schools to continue making money in the oilfield, He started asking me to go golfing with him after work. Long story short I am a competitor and was embarrassed how bad he beat me every time. I continued to go with him and by the end of my first summer actually spending time golfing I was shooting in the low eighties. I continued playing every summer after hockey ended and continually got better without going to the range or putting in much time. Eventually this year I went to play hockey for a NCAA school. While there I was convinced to try and walk on the golf team. The golf team was only d3 mind you. But regardless I made the team and went on to play in most of the tournaments along with breaking the course record in a qualifying event. I can hit the ball 330 yards somewhat easily and shoot any where from the mid sixties to high 70's not exactly consistent I know. My question to you guys is do you think at my age there would still be hope for me if I actually put in some effort and practiced? Thanks

What is your full name? What school are you at? After I know that I will let you know my thoughts. Also- what qualifying event did you break the course record in?

The last sentence of your post puzzles me, you're telling me you haven't put in any effort or practice and your scores are mid 60's to 70's - c'mon who ya kidding??

I played in college with a few hockey players, Scott Pellerin who was on the St. Louis Blues and other teams, was on the UMAINE golf team when I played (Not the top of D1 schools but it was fun).  He did hit the crap out of the ball, but played golf when he wasn't doing Junior Hockey in Canada.  He was probably a 2 or 3 handicap at the time.

But I'm with you MJ, no effort of practice to shoot mid-60's, you should be in the tour already.

This guy is full of it. First off, if he is shooting Mid 60's low 70's at D3 he would have placed top 10 at nationals no problem. Secondly- I myself played hockey and walked on at a D3 program and no one out there is breaking course records.

Easy way to check. Can't he simply post his GHIN number as you have done with your username (do they have that up north over there?) and we can all have a browse.

Sadly we don't have GHIN over here so when I make wild and illustrious claims about my golfing prowess in the future you're just going to have to  believe me :)

The only thing puzzling me is the term "once and a while". I think you mean  "once in a while".

As far as the golf goes, no problem.

You should easily be able to turn pro and do very well. The fact that you have played hockey is a HUGE advantage. Presumably it has taught you how to play under pressure too.

Google isn't turning up any results about your course record. Just post a link. :-)

The that got me is he says he hits the ball 330 somewhat easily...I mean that's Bubba type stuff there...Dustin Johnson is leading the PGA Tour right now with a 318.8 average...330 somewhat easily?!?!?!  C'mon man!  and he has his handicap as a +4 right now but shoots from the mid 60's to high 70s?  Does that indicate a +4 handicap?  I know it would depend on how many of each he is shooting, but come on...if this isn't a fake post his college coach (if he actually played college golf) is an idiot for not telling this kid he has a shot at turning pro and making some serious money...

Why would he lie? I didn't really see anything to suggest he isn't telling the truth. Remember, he played hockey.

Why do alot of people lie about their scores and distances...it's internet inflation. If he is really shooting those scores and hitting the ball 330 with little effort...why didnt his coach or other players tell him he has a shot at going pro. So playing hockey means you have the fundamentals of golf down?! I played hockey as well, the main things it has to do with golf is hand eye and leg strength...I know a lot of people that played hockey that aren't good at golf at all... I'm not saying some of it isn't true, but where did he go?!? Since people have questioned him he hasn't been back...I'm just saying the stats to me seem to be a little inflated.

      I've played Bali Hai, Bear's Best and Painted Desert. I enjoyed Bali Hai the most--course was in great shape, friendly staff and got paired in a great group. Bear's Best greens were very fast, didn't hold the ball well (I normally have enough spin to stop the ball after 1-2 hops).  The sand was different on many holes. Some were even dark sand (recreation of holes from Hawaii). Unfortunately I was single and paired with a local "member" who only played the front 9.  We were stuck behind a slow 4-some who wouldn't let me through even when the local left. Painted Desert was decent, just a bit far from the Strip where we were staying.

      Honestly, unless there's something about that rough there that makes it abnormally penal or a lost ball likely, this might be the play. I don't know how the mystrategy cone works, but per LSW, you don't use every shot for your shot zones. In that scatter plot, you have no balls in the bunker, and 1 in the penalty area. The median outcome seems to be a 50 yard pitch. Even if you aren't great from 50 yards, you're better off there than in a fairway bunker or the penalty area on the right of the fairway. It could also be a strategy you keep in your back pocket if you need to make up ground. Maybe this is a higher average score with driver, but better chance at a birdie. Maybe you are hitting your driver well and feel comfortable with letting one rip.  I get not wanting to wait and not wanting to endanger people on the tee, but in a tournament, I think I value playing for score more than waiting. I don't value that over hurting people, but you can always yell fore 😆 Only thing I would say is I'm not sure whether that cone is the best representation of the strategy (see my comment above about LSW's shot zones). To me, it looks like a 4 iron where you're aiming closer to the bunker might be the play. You have a lot of shots out to the right and only a few to the left. Obviously, I don't know where you are aiming (and this is a limitation of MyStrategy), but it seems like most of your 4 iron shots are right. You have 2 in the bunker but aiming a bit closer to the bunker won't bring more of your shots into the bunker. It does bring a few away from the penalty area on the right.  This could also depend on how severe the penalties are for missing the green. Do you need to be closer to avoid issues around the green?  It's not a bad strategy to hit 6 iron off the tee, be in the fairway, and have 150ish in. I'm probably overthinking this.
