From the article A New Way to Putt on the Today's Golfer website.

I have been working on my putting stroke, but still reading greens is a mystery to me. I read this article and I was thinking of using this as the center of my practice routine this summer. I also downloaded a clinometer app for my smartphone, and plan to use it on the practice greens to develop my feel for reading the fall line.

What do you guys think of this approach?

I think you should take an actual AimPoint class. :) The article of course also recommends that as it's written by one of the long-time AimPoint guys.

The article is right in terms of generalities, but, for example, sometimes a putt from 2 o'clock or 10 o'clock breaks more than the putt on the same green from 3 or 9.

For example (and I'm making this exaggerated to show the point):

Stimp 13, 4% slope, 20 footer.

From 3:00 the putt breaks about 95 inches.

From 2:00 the putt breaks over 130 inches.

Heck, from 1:00 the putt still breaks over 110 inches…

And it's not just on stimp 13 or 4% slope.

Stimp 9, 3% slope, 20 footer:

3:00: a bit less than 3'

2:00: a bit more than 3'

There used to be a thought (Templeton promoted it I think) that you could basically putt to the same location - a spot above the hole - from any location on the green. Turns out that's not terribly accurate either.

Maybe next winter when I am back in Florida I will take the AimPoint class. The nearest class to where I live in Vermont is two hours away in Montreal. Meantime, I am just looking to up my percentage on 5 ft and in, and lower my misses inside of three feet significantly. Two putts for me are still the goal. One putts are still blessed memories to be cherished ;)

Also, I got no business on a course with a 13 stimp and a 4% slope on any green.
