I bought and got fitted for a new driver yesterday. It's a new R15. But I have the same problem with it that I've had with my last 2 drivers. I'm hitting down on it too much. My ball speed is around 160, swing speed around 110, rpms around 2900, but trajectory only about 3-5 degrees. I'm fitted for a 9.5 as with my last couple drivers. I've tried 10.5, and even a 12, but with them the ball spins way too much and lose a ton of ball speed. My aggravation is I drive 260-270, but with 8-9 degrees of trajectory I know I'd average 300 or better! What am I doing wrong or how do I stop hitting down on my driver? What are some tips to try? I release my hands too early on my irons and hit fat, but I don't feel like that with my driver.

Check over on the thread about 140 mph swing speed. I posted a pic ( with the red lines) showing to line up on the ball. Aim and swing at the empty tee. Let the ball on the forward tee get in the way, and you will be hitting up on it. Jack

When you were being fitted for the driver were you still getting 3-5 degrees of launch? If so they really weren't doing their job. You should have been fitted for a more lofted driver because there is absolutely no reason for you to be losing ball speed from a 12* head.

Perhaps you may have the ball to far back in your stance. Greg Norman put the ball up off his left toe and some times a little past there. Couldn't hurt to give it a try.

Yes, with the 12 degree my launch angle was still at a 7-8, but my rpm went to almost 5000, ball speed slowed to around 100 from 150. Distance dropped about 30-40 yards. The 10.5 was right in the middle of those. The 9.5 gave me the best ball speed, rpm, and I was still carrying 268 average. But the trajectory was low and I know that is because I'm working on my swing. Some were strong line drives, others I topped, or popped up. "when I tee it forward any more than inside my left heel I duck hook it something wicked!"  Didn't want to quote all of that post.

From that explanation, I'm making an assumption here ---- It sounds like you have a very strong grip or your rolling the shoulders or a combo of both to a degree. Either way, the club face is being drastically closed at impact. If there's a way for you to post a video on here, I'm sure the folks here will be more than helpful.

Yeah I don't think the reason you hook it is the ball position, it's something else. Definitely seems like you have to go from swinging down and left to more right/less left and more shallow. Check out that thread I posted.

Helpful tip: then don't. Quote it, and delete the parts to which you don't want to respond.

That just isn't a believable statement.

Unless he didn't hit the ball solid and hit it instead off the upper part of the driver head.... i.e. hit a skyball.

Pretty sure a fitter wouldn't have counted those results. OP had to have at least gotten in a few proper hits with each loft tested.

The problem with the higher lofted clubs were the increase in spin and loss of distant. With the 10.5, I gained almost a 1,000 rpm and lost 20 yards or so, the 12 I went to almost 5,000 rpm and lost about 40 yards! With the 9.5 I was at 3 degrees trajectory but still carrying 270 with 2900 rpm and 150 mph ball speed.

You should look at flightscope trajectory optimizer because 150mph ball speed, 2900rpm backspin, and a 5* launch only gets you 212.8 yard carry and 230-270 with roll depending on what fairway firmness setting you use.

    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
    • Day 96 (18 Mar 24) - Continued work with the Divot Board with the GW and hard foam balls.  Focused on small target/small miss…setup to hit target about 30yds out - success if it hit within 6’ circle of target, fail if outside.  Had decent success averaging about 3 out of 4 (hitting in groups of four).
