most golfers have trouble with this thing called a SLICE. The ball starts off OK, and then gently throws off line, and you end up in the rough or worse. I used to have this problem before, but i decided to read up on a golf book. The name of the book was "Tiger Woods - how i play golf". I read the book and it helped me, but i was curious to see what it really did when looking at the frame by frame pictures. I noticed something with my swing that differed mine for his. On my downswing, the would push through the ball, never turning the club over, square, and around my body at impact. This was the cure to my slice. I began follwing through the ball as i should and 1-2-3, the slice was gone. Now its long and straight. So, make sure, when you address the ball, that you know what swing your going to take. Keep the fundamental skills in your mind and you wont make any mistakes

Fundamental Skills to improve:
1) Rotate the club on an even plane around your body, turning your shoulders.
2) At about 3/4 of the swing the shaft should be pointing down directly at the ball, this tells you your on plane with your back swing.
3) For the downswing, follow the same plane, but rotate through the ball, pulling the club around your body for a finish.

*This is key to a nice finish on the ball

ROTATION ROTATION AND ROTATION - is the funimental skill of golf

Hopefully this helps someone....

i was cursed today with a wicked slice at the driving range with my 3-wood...tried different stance...different angles...different ball positioning....ahhh...so frustrating....tossed the 3-wood back in the bag...pulled out a 4-iron to and started hitting the ball straight and far...made me feel so much better...finished the bucket with the 4-iron and 6-iron....

the dreaded slice~!....this is what keep me stuck as a 20 handicap...

(sigh) if it was as easy as reading a post on a golf bulletin board.

I'm glad you were able to fix your slice.

Same here. There was a thread post over at another board (I think it was by Ringer) that stated that the driver's shaft flex may be the culprit if you're not slicing with your irons. I don't know if thats true, but in my case I have to strong grip the driver to hit it straight. I also know that any small errors in my swing will show up magnified off the driver.

I had a lesson on Monday. My instructor was able to get me to drive the ball straight with my irons and woods, but could not figure out what my problem was with the driver. The driver would pop up and slice horribly. I'm starting to think that it might be the shaft as well.

I've heard of one teacher who actually advocated attempting to hook the ball when you were slicing and doing vice versa when you were hooking. Not exactly my cup of tea but hey, its an option (albeit a very bad one in my opinion).

Higher handicappers are guilty of swinging with more tense and overly active hands and arms through the release. Because the Driver is lighter and has less momentum helping the arms roll through, it's more difficult to achieve the square face at impact. An open face results, promoting a slice, push, or push/slice.

My slice is typically caused by the left arm chicken wing (aka not releasing though impact). Other factors certainly creep in like weight shift to left leg and staying on plane. I also use a strong grip which has helped greatly.

Not just body rotation. IF you are using POWER and your right hand too much. That's what causing slices.

You got to use your left more than right hand (for right handed).

This can be reduce by using strong grip, see three knuckles on your left hand grip.

This might be the most valuable piece of advice. Lately, I've concentrated more on the distance one foot before impact and one foot after.

Also, I tried staying closed longer. Prevents a late swing which ultimately opens the clubface.

My worst shot is usually off the tee...I hit fine my irons, but can't get off the tee with a driver to save my life. What I have found that works is simply to swing slower...I usually it well when I do this and if I don't, I am in a recoverable spot.

That's not really a "release" problem. It's really a problem created by "trying" to close the clubface. It's a crazy game, if you let the clubhead get past your hands, you can't control the clubface!

But wait! There's more...... If you let the clubhead get past your hands, then you will hit the ball shorter too! How much shorter? About 10-20 yards with a driver, in just lost swing speed, then whatever the slice steals from your ball speed.

The one thing my instructor had me do that worked was this(albeit setup is correct)....instead of making a full turn just bring the club to waist height and swing through with a finish, you will get pretty good results this way.

I have been swinging this way for months, perfecting my release and finish. Once I had that down I then moved to a fuller swing.

You will be suprised to find that even though you are swinging only half way you will make contact in the sweetspot and hit it longer than you did with a full swing..

Try it next time

Discovering my muscle tension problem was a eureka moment. Now arms/hands are passive. Trust body pivot to whip the club through. Eliminated driver slice and iron mis-hits.

Could explain inconsistency that baffles so many with otherwise good swing mechanics.

    • Nothing is assured and lots of talented young athletes in many sports fail to achieve greatness. as was said, injuries, growth, lots of things can come into play, And let’s let honest, over the years a few players have been branded “The Next Tiger Woods” and yet there is only 1 Tiger Woods. My initial point was if he can do a great breakout it may capture the attention of a new generation.  Back in the 70s it was Secretariat in horse racing, we also had Jordan in basketball and let’s not forget Tiger for golf.  Stories get people interested and I think golf needs a new story. I will pull for him and hope it works out but there are so many factors that come into play you just do not know, But I can hope.
    • Day 114: 4/19/24 Chipping and putting practice. Tried a little hinge and hold with good results, which has never been the case during a real round. Playing tomorrow and eager to play.
    • I don't think I've found any of the Good Good stuff, or the guys that were once a part of it, very interesting.
    • Day 535, April 19, 2024 30 minutes in the middle of the day while doing errands and a bunch of other things. Behind. Behind.
    • Day 127 (19 Apr 24)  -  Played in the Friday Men's group today.  While I shoot 82, it was a pretty solid round with 10 pars, 5 bogies and 3 doubles.  I really hated the doubles - but each one was followed by a par come back, so "accepting" the number has really begun to pay off and not letting it get to me on the following hole in thinking "I have to get that stroke back".
