My little girl, 7, has expressed an interest in going with me when I hit some balls. How should one approach it? Just get a Jr set of clubs and let her hack at the ball or get some type of lesson for her? I think it would be really neat if she would up liking it and maybe playing for her school as she gets older.

Maybe she could teach the old man a few things then. ;)

Thanks for any input guys!

I would do just that to start.  It doesn't need to be a lot of clubs either.  Take video of her and show her what she looks like.  Then show her what a good golf swing looks like, Lydia Ko for example or Stacy Lewis. Kids are great at imitating.

Maybe just get a junior 6 or 7 iron and take her to the range and just let her hit a few balls to see if she likes it. if she does then go for  junior set, if not all you paid for is one iron.

Maybe to start with just show her the basics of grip and how to make a half swing?

Just thinking about how i'll start when my son is old enough

Go to the practice green, let her have an old cut down putter and a few balls.  Let her learn what she will while you do your thing.  Why be overly directive?  I watch kids and young adults getting instruction and marvel that they ever return to the green after the endless loop of NO, NO, NO, you are doing it wrong from the instructors.   Negative comments, esp from parents, are very disruptive and counter productive but so easy to blurt out. Always focus on the positive elements of whatever she is doing and guide her towards a more efficient method, if  you know one.

If and when she expresses a  desire for betterment, eg, why doesn't ball get into hole, how can i make it get into the hole? sort of thing, then think about tiny instruction.  If she has an age mate to go with to the green, that too might help make the experience fun/rewarding. That's what kids want: fun and reward through accomplishment.

Get her a kids set made for a child her size. They don't cost much....definitely bring her with you!     I wouldn't worry about lessons yet, unless she expressed interest in joining a class.  When my son turned 5, I bought him a baseball tee-ball set for his birthday, and all he wanted to do was pretend to play golf with his ball and bat!!  hahaha......

I immediately bought him a kids set of clubs and he hit whiffle balls in the backyard until his hands bled.   I tape a finger and he knew this...... he came into the house and had me tape up his sores, and he went out and hit more balls!!    I'd bring him to the "big course" with me in the evenings.  He'd ride the cart with me and had a blast!! He mostly rode along, but  I'd let him bring a wedge and a putter and he would hit a few shots here and there.   When we got on the green.....I'd let him drop a ball somewhere near the hole and let him putt out.    HE LOVED IT!!!!   We played for 2 years like this, but unfortunate circumstances brought an end to it.  My wife was forced onto the road for a year for work, and I was home with the kids in the evenings and could no longer take him to play golf.   He showed great promise!   He could really hit the ball and this was when he was aged 5 &6.  After a year absence....I lost him and he lost interest in the game.  Bummer........

Now he's a bowling maniac...he got me started!!   He bowled at a birthday party and started asking me to take him bowling.  I was never a bowler, but I refused to say no.  Now we're a couple of bowling maniacs!  LOL....I need to find time for both.....I play golf 100+ round per year, and make time to bowl every weekend too!!  Now he is 12 and carries a 210 league average.

Definitely get your daughter a proper set of kids clubs and bring her along.......................a no brainer!!!

I got my boy into golf last year, I'd take him to the range and got him a 7i, then I started taking him to a mini pitch and put course, which we both enjoyed, then I booked him into a course of junior group lessons, which he really enjoyed, so then I got him a junior set and he's now on his 4th lot of group lessons and has really improved and has a lovely full swing and a tidy little short game, (he's only 10) I'm actually taking him on a full size course this week for the first time! Prob do either 5 or 9 holes depending how tiring he finds it, ( on foot of course) he's already asking for a new set of clubs and hasn't even had his current ones 12 months, I'd just let her try the game, and if she shows an interest, teach her only the basics, and if she still keen, ask her if she would like a set and some lessons to improve, I'm actually looking forward to the day kicks my ass, and if he keeps his current enthusiasm, that might only be a few years away!

I've lived the same situation twice ... with boys.

I bought them a starter set from Callaway Pre-Owned.

Cut down clubs are too heavy and introduce poor habits.

Most starter sets have a driver, fairway, hybrid, 9i, SW, and Putter. More advanced sets include a 7i.

Or you can go to the store and purchase US Kids clubs - a 9i and Putter. But for the price of 2 clubs, you probably want a set.

Good luck - the starter sets have higher lofts and are easier to get the ball in the air, which the kids like.

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
