Any takers?

I'll be flying in Tuesday night at 9 pm for work on Thursday/Friday in Jersey, so I'm taking Wednesday June 16th off to play Bethpage Black. Kicked myself for not playing it when I lived there, but I wasn't expecting to be relocated again 6 months after I moved to the Northeast. Right now I do not have a hotel booked on Long Island as the plan is to try and get a tee time two days in advance since I have an out of state ID. If I cant get a tee time I'm going to camp out in the rental car with another friend from Jersey hoping to get a time some point on Wednesday.

Anyone played it and have recommendations?

@nevets88 @dkolo @newtogolf ... what say you??  I've still yet to play it, but hope to one of these days (maybe August??) so I'm curious to hear about it as well.

As much as I'd love to spend Bloomsday putting up triple figures on the Black course, I don't think I can swing it in the next few weeks. I have a bit too much uncertainty going on right now with nongolf stuff.

(I was thinking more along the lines of getting your respective takes on his follow up question.) :-P

I know it's an extremely difficult course and is recommended only for highly skilled golfers, haha.

Less snarkily, this is a good resource:

http://www.golfonlongisland.com/teebox/a-visitors-guide-to-golf-on-long-island.html

From people I've spoken to who've played, as long as you're a single or twosome and are really flexible about when you get out, it's not that hard to get a tee time most random weekdays, unless things just break bad and it's one of those days. I know a guy who played by himself two years ago in the summer.

And as far as booby prizes go, the adjacent Red Course is actually really great by all accounts. The other 3 are basically just muni courses with some interesting bits. Verrrry slow rounds though.

And the driving range is limited flight balls and only about 200 yards or so, so understand that. It ruined my swing two years ago when I didn't know that, haha.

The course I play at now is a Par 71 Slope 142 Rating: 74.4 -  7100 yards. I shoot mid 80's right now.

I wish, maybe someday, I've played all the others there.

A friend played the Black last year, and he's pretty good, shoots in the 80's, he said it was beyond hard, beautiful course, but not fun because of the difficulty, the bunkers will eat you alive.

The walk is what kills you. Caddies or push carts only. No riding carts and super hilly. It's basically built on where the glaciers from the last ice age stopped and left all kind of crazy terrain. .

Sorry!

A)  I was quickly going off the top of my head, and

B)  I have you associated with Washington DC and have never been able to shake that connection.  And it's solely because when I see RFK, I think of RFK stadium.

Other than that, all I can say is ...:loco::8)

I think as a reparation you should have to make yourself available for a round of golf with me if my clubs and I are ever in San Diego together.

I dunno what I can say about it that hasn't been said about it already. I don't mean this disparagingly, but my nickname for it is Big Box GC. It's big. It's long. Huge bunkers, tall thick juicy rough, long forced carries, steep hills and 5 1/2 hour rounds, minimum. Once a guy in my group walked away after the 4th hole. We were waiting at the 5th tee, 1.5 hours into the round. My other nickname: Backup Bethpage.

A couple of blind tee shots, some blind approaches, greens are for the most part pretty flat but deceptively hard to read, for me anyways. but I haven't used Aimpoint on it yet. The par 5 4th is magnificent, lots of long par 4s. Get in the rough, you're toast. 15 and 16 are brutally long, 5 is long. 10 and 11 are long. It's... long.

No carts, push carts or carry. A single can easily get on during the weekdays if he gets there early, you can trying calling in to see if you can luck out and get someone's cancellation. A twosome, a little more difficult, but doable. My guess is if you get there at dawn-ish, you'll probably get something around 2ish, but it's still a roll of the dice. You could be there watching the monitors, and bloop, twosome on Black @ 10:00. Almost a guarantee you'll get a tee time 4 or later.  Always call the info line to check if anything comes up. Always. 516 249 0707.  Unfortunately, I can't make it out that date. I've been playing golf range rather than golf course, even if I could go, Black would eat me alive right now.

If you wanna do the overnight thing, see below and remember, back into the parking spot.

I am not sure what my schedule will be that week but if I'm open I'd like to play it again.  It's clearly not an easy course but I'm not as good a golfer as you are so you'll probably enjoy it much more than I did.  It's also a tough walk, lots of hills and feels much longer walking it than it shows on the score card.  You want to play from the fairway if possible as the waste areas and rough can make your life miserable.  Wear comfortable shoes and bring a bag that will work well on a push cart or is light enough for you to carry.

I am not sure how tee time reservations work for out of towners, but I don't think you'll have to spend the night in your car in mid-June on a weekday.

I'll PM you if once I know my schedule for sure.

Deal!

And I will be in Fire Island this summer, which is why I mentioned August in my first post.  If I can swing it, I hope to play a round somewhere on the island during that time.  I've floated the idea by Steven and a few others, and we're going to hopefully try and make something work.

On line versus in line? Oh... my... gaawwd... I've been privy to this argument before. I will shoot myself if I ever have to listen to one of these again. God d@mn grammar nazis (except for your wife of course :-D ).

To tell you the truth, my favorite public course in the area is The Links at Union Vale, less dealing with crap, much faster rounds, peaceful but way out in the middle of nowhere. Not a US Open course but used for some tournaments.

PM me when you' know the dates you'll be here maybe we can set something up.  I think you'd like the Black course given your handicap but there are plenty of alternatives.

Crap, I got excited when looking at the course, and then realized when you said "in the area" that you didn't just mean on Long Island.  Ironically, the last two summers in a row I we were right in that area for weddings.  Not this year though. :(

    • I did read the fine print tonight. It said replace with “similar features & function”.  8 yeas ago my purchase had features that today are available on the lower end models and the current version of my model has more “bells & whistles” than what I got 8 years ago.  So I am thinking they honored the agreement and I can’t argue the offer. since getting a credit for the full purchase price all I am really out over the past 8 years was the cost of the extended warranty, which was less than a low end  treadmill would have cost me. now the question is which model to replace with.  I’ll stay with Nordic Track or I forfeit the $1,463 credit so I will get Nordic Track.  And they honored the warranty and were not hard to work with which is a plus.
    • Generally speaking, extended warranties are a terrible deal and should almost always be avoided. They are a huge profit center for the companies that offer them, which should tell you almost everything you need to know about how much value most consumers get when purchasing them.  This is correct, and the old adage applies - only buy insurance when you can't afford the loss. This usually doesn't apply to most consumer goods.  To your second question, no I don't believe the offer is fair. They are replacing it, but it is not being replaced at "no cost to you". Since the amount being disputed (over $500) is non-trivial, I would probably push the issue. Don't waste your time on the phone with a customer service agent or a supervisor. They have probably given you all they have the authority to do. Rather, I would look at the terms of your agreement and specifically legal disputes. The odds are you probably agreed to binding arbitration in the event of a dispute. The agreement will outline what steps need to be followed, but it will probably look something like this.  1. Mail the Nordic Track legal department outlining your dispute and indicate you are not satisfied with the resolution offered.  2. Open up a case with the AAA (American Arbitration Association), along with the required documentation. 3. Wait about 4-5 weeks for a case to be opened - at which point someone from Nordic Track's legal department will offer to give you the new model at no cost to you.  They certainly don't want to spend the time and energy to fight you over $500. 4. Enjoy your new Nordic Track at no cost to you. I recently entered binding arbitration against a fairly large and well known company that screwed me over and refused to make it right. In my demand letter, I made a pretty sizeable request that included compensation for my time and frustration. Once it hit their legal department, they cut me a check - no questions asked. It was far cheaper to settle with me than to send their legal team to defend them in the arbitration.
    • I never thought of looking at it on multiple purchases like you said.  Yes, the extended may help me on 1 or 2 items but not the other 5 or 6.
    • Day 84 - Forgot to post yesterday, but I did some more chipping/pitching.    Back/neck were feeling better today, so I did a much overdue Stack session.
