In a related story, Greg Norman announced that this was still not accurate enough for him, because he judges distance to the half centimeter.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

I doubt that. Link or quotation please. That is more likely to be someone trying to have a go at Norman.

I'm pretty sure he was joking.

Lost it long ago......

Sorry, didn't mean to pull your leg right off your body.

I was having a bit of a riff, of course, on Norman's oft-quoted claim to be able to control distance to the half yard and that hence his caddie gave him yardage to the half-yard.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Norman is the human Taylormade in terms of outlandish claims.

Did Norman say that too? I know Johnny Miller did…

For military purposes GPS can be accurate to less than an inch. We just need to convince the government that golf courses have no strategic value so that they will stop adding variability to the GPS signal we get when we are on a course. It would make Game Golf a lot more accurate.

Selective Availability was turned off in May 2001.

Current inaccuracies are due to systematic weaknesses, atmospheric conditions, poor receiver hardware or software.

At best, under the best conditions, without differentially corrected receivers you can get 3 meters.

Typical for consumer chips is 5-7m, can often be 10m or more.

Go ahead, argue with me (I won't reply), but I was trained and employed by a state agency to collect GPS data.

He was quoted as saying it to a reporter in 1986 in Lauren St John's biography of him.

I had heard it before but I double checked before the first post I made

Any decent golf GPS is going to use WAAS which has been consistently shown to provide ~1 m accuracy in the CONUS:  http://www.nstb.tc.faa.gov/REPORTS/waaspan17.pdf  My golf GPS might not be as good as the receivers used in the study but given the spot checks I've done against lasers, I'm more than happy to keep using mine.

I think gps is made less accurate by the government...although places like airports have satellites that can make them more accurate

From my understanding the accuracy issues arise from the relay time it takes to triangulate between 3 satellites. By the time the signal is received, positions have changed thus dulling the accuracy of the location.

I apologize for having a spam URL in my signature and will not do it again.
