We've all been there, the approach shot misses and hits the rough around the green. Some lies are sticking up, some are stuck down. For arguments sake the shot to the green is no more than 5-15yds. What shot shape and options do you feel you use the most.

The courses I play have fairly high rough and it tends to get stuck down, I like to deloft my 54 and play it like a hard putt. If I manage to have a lie where 75+% of the ball is exposed I will try to use the 58 open faces and pop it to the front of the green and try to get some roll. How about you guys?

Sorry, but Its absolutely impossible to say without seeing the exact lie, distance to the green, and the distance and slope to the pin itself. Could be just about anything....

I see your point. I am just inferring about different types of lies and how to play them close to the green. Ie: buried lie, fluffy lie, divots etc. The distance would be greenside rough within 5 yards to 15 yards out from the green. I speak to only the courses around me I have played lately..

Depends on 2 things. 1) of course the lie itself - could use anywhere from a 60 to a 7 - flop or runner and 2) pin location - how much green, over a bunker etc, etc. As the old saying goes, there's more than one way to skin a cat. All depends what your good at and your comfort zone.

At the same time, if it's at the bottom, I sometimes have luck with my Magic Edel 60, and hitting it sharply downwards, hoping it will pop out high. I"ve been lucky before....

For some reason I always seem to blade the buried shot. I am fairly confident wedge player but when I am out of my comfort zone I look like I have never even heard of golf before.

This is a subject near to my heart this time of year, when the long rough in Virginia is growing beautifully, before it gets withered a bit by the summer heat.  My "normal" chip is with a somewhat de-lofted wedge, a feeling of dragging the club through the ball.  The club choice will depend on the relative distance of carry and roll I need. However, when the grass gets long and lush, its hard to maintain consistent clubhead speed.   In the long rough, I have two basic shots.  If I have a lot of green to work with, I play the ball further back, and strike severely downward, almost a "stab."  By striking downward more severely, there's less grass to slow the club.  The ball comes out lower and rolls out.  When I have less room, I'll use something like a bunker set-up, open stance, clubface open, and a long lazy swing.  The ball generally comes out higher and softer.  With the longer swing, the momentum of the club helps cut through the grass better than a smaller swing does.  The last thing to mention, when the lie is bad, and the grass is long, my expectations change.  I'm still trying to get it close, but I make absolutely certain that my "miss." if I make one, is still putting.

+2.

The OP's question is better suited with actual images of the ball & lie.    Back 9 Bandit, can you post a few example photos so that we can have a meaningful discussion?

I can't answer your question, but what I do when I am practicing around the green is to deliberately poke the ball into the grass sometimes, poke it into some really dense clover or something for several  shots. Then I tend to whack it harder than I would think with a 54 wedge trying to de-loft it slightly because the same stroke I would use with a fluffy lie just wont work. My technique is probably bad because I don't have the chops to change my swing too much, but for a high handicapper like myself, it is good to have the practice with the lousy lies.
