I've been recently hitting a bit thin and my coach advised me to just focus on turning my chest back and through and not think about arms or shoulders as these will turn anyway. This feels really weird as I'm used to starting with my arms but I found last night that I was hitting a lot better and getting ball then turf. Is this a good swing thought or will it lead to further problems down the line?

Swing thoughts come in many forms.  Perhaps your coach thought this would improve your sequence timing.  You may have been getting your arms ahead of your hips and this tied them together better.  The thread below talks about this.

I tend to be an armsy player when im off. When i thought of left hip bump then firing my right shoulder, it was like magic lol my newest personal golf swing revelation! : ) Ps if u come over the top, firing right shoulder would def not help

There are a variety of swing thoughts that can work, it depends on how it fits the player and their priority piece. If you're hitting it better than it's probably a good one for you. Feeling "weird" might also be a good thing because it means your swing is changing/different. If it felt the same then it means nothing is changing.

Turning rates of the torso are important.
