I currently have the Taylormade R1 R flex/length shaft standard grip and I recently picked up the Taylormade Aeroburner 3 wood and I like it. I am look for opinions on the Aeroburner driver. Would it be worth it to get it or is the R1 better? I usually hit the R1 about 240 yds. Thanks for your help.

Why not go to a store and just hit it side by side with your driver and see which one feels better? Everyone is different so it will be hard for someone to give useful advice in terms of preference of one driver over another.

The Aeroburner has a fin on it. May as well throw any finless drivers in the trash. But yeah, in all seriousness, trying the two out is a good idea. The Aeroburner is a quarter inch longer than the R1 in the shaft. I think the R1 is lower spinning. The R1 is adjustable; did you have it fitted for you, @Bryant Law ? It's only 2 years old; I wouldn't assume you'd definitely see significant performance gains unless the R1 was a bad fit.

Yeah, I actually have the R1 and love it.. But for fun since I'm in the states on vacation I might go check out if it is a good fit for me and if I can convince my self to get another :)

Sort of. It originally had a Sflex shaft and I was hitting everything to the right so I went to my local golf store (Addicted to Golf Va Beach) and because of my swing speed they put a Rflex shaft in it. I am hitting it much straighter now. I was just looking to try to get some more distance.

Can I get a golf club with a spoiler. I want more down drag. The driver feels a bit loose on the course.

:-D

R1 was one of the more successful Taylormade drivers. It's only 2 years old, so I doubt you'd see any improvement in distance from the clubface or clubhead design. The only thing that would give you a boost would be if the Aeroburner was a better fit for your swing. The only way to test that out is to demo or get fitted at a golf store. If you do get fitted on a launch monitor then bring your R1 to hit first. That way you can compare the numbers right there.

Aeroburner -- non adjustable, which is a deal killer if your swing is changing.

If you are looking for adjustable, aerodynamic and light, try the Callaway BB V Series while in the States.

Very long by all reviews.

That's true, it's actually a nice club, even though you could be forgiven for thinking it's designed for senior citizens the way Callaway markets it.

Yes, the 9 degree V Series head won a couple of PGA Tournaments last fall. And in a Rick Shiels review, the Bible, right?  it was longer than the G30. It's not the latest and greatest so you don't hear as much about it.

Thanks for all the replies. I hit the Callaway V 10.5 degree yesterday side-by-side with my Taylormade R1 set at 11 degrees. I hit my R1 straighter and longer and had a 14.9 degree launch angle with around 1800 rpm spin. So I think I will just stick with it. I was averaging 230 yds with either a straight down the middle or a very slight (5 yrd) fade to the right shot shape. I only have an 88 mph swing speed.

Drivers are tough. At that Swing speed, you are testing the limits of the regular flex in a V Series. The stiff would get better numbers if you did not demo a stiff. I also owned an R1 and wanted more forgiveness and length even though it is long. My son has my R1 and also has a 112+ swing speed so he can utilize it to its most potential with another shaft After a 10.5 V head, I switched to a 9 head in a V and stiff, and wound up w better numbers. The 9° head is designed slightly different than the 10.5 It is an apples to oranges comparison between the two unless you adjust lofts and shafts to get the most out of each head. Good luck with the R1. It is a good driver if you don't miss much and is moderately forgiving

I originally had a S Flex in my R1 and had to change to a R Flex because I could not get the face closed and I hit every shot to the right. Since changing I am hitting it straight and hitting around 70% fairways.

I don't think you will gain more distance over a 2 year old driver.

Best advice i can give you is keep the R1 driver and take a few lessons with your local pro.

Congrats. Sounds like the R1 works great for you. It weight is low and forward -- a precursor to the SLDR but more forgiving.

A problem found with comparing and finding the right driver is that shafts are all over the place as to flex, checkpoint, torque, etc. For example, the V Series stock shaft is only 43g and is high torque (loose feeling). The R1 stock shaft is about 55-56g and probably has a lower torque. Now if you had a Fuji 565 in the V Series that is a no cost option, that is a closer comparison.

As stated, and as we all know, it's tough to compare drivers. A closer comparison might be the Big Bertha 815 10.5 and the R1, rather than the V.

Oh, I eventually enjoyed the R1 but it made me work too hard for my swing at that time. I'd get along better with it now. But my son loves the R1.... c'est la vie.

You've stated that your swing speed is 88 mph and you hit it from 230 - 240. According to swing speed charts available online that is about as far as you can hit it with that speed. It sounds like your current driver is fit perfectly to you.

    • @boogielicious and I are definitely in for the Stay & Play and will need the extra night's stay on Friday. I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
