Clubhead Size

I am always thinking of if I should drop my hybrid or get a new one.

I am just wondering if as handicap decreases does the tendency or preference for a smaller clubhead size increase? I wonder if there is a psychological thing that happens a smaller clubhead size just seems more appealing as you are able to hit the sweet spot on the club more often.

Given I prefer more classic looking golf clubs. I like a blade looking iron. Right now I kinda not liking how my hybrid looks. It seems a tad to big. I would probably end up towards a more tour style version over a more game improvement version.

Just wanted to hear some other opinions on this.

I noticed that the size of the hybrids does decrease with increased golfer skill.

All the better golfers I know carry smaller and smaller clubs. I joked that one of the people I play with in the mornings could just get a set of PSP . He could save on weight.

As a higher handicapper, I like the Adams A12OS because it's super high launching and forgiving, there're the two things I need most in a hybrid.  When I look at the smaller headed versions I prefer the look, so I can see why your thinking of a smaller head.  At your level of golfer I would expect the smaller head to be no issue, and as we all know, if you like what your looking at, it can only help your confidence at address.

Maybe I will have the same dilemma one day if I keep improving !!

I don't think it is the size of the clubhead as much as it is the feel of a smaller head. The larger head designs have the COG so low and back that the vertical gear effect is too excessive for the better player to have the feeling of control over their trajectory. Ever since my X Hot broke snapped in half I started gaming my old 975J-VS and it just feels so much better, It feels like driving a nail with a hammer while with the X Hot Pro it felt more like the club was throwing the ball up and out like a sling.

While I lean towards the visual (I.E. how the club head looks), I feel that my lower hdcp friends choose the smaller heads simply to still be able to work the ball as needed. The hybrids I play are larger in size and give me steady high straight consistent shots (on good swings of course). My main peeve is hook faces/closed face angles -- I hate that so I look for square to open face style hybrids. I don't need help going left but I understand why many are designed that way.. Just seems to be a trade off with larger designed hybrids.

What hybrid do you have, what loft is it?

The size of a hybrid is one thing, but that shape of it is another.  Some hybrids are offset more than others and don't look good...especially it you feel like you are going to hook it.  In my experience, the look of a hybrid is more important than any other club.  Try your hybrid alongside a few others if you can and figure out what you like/don't like in the look of a hybrid club and then decide if you want to get a new one.

I play blades (MP-67) but like FW looking hybrids more than iron looking hybrids.  I wouldn't say that the size of your preferred hybrid has everything to do with skill level or what irons you prefer.

Another thing, you mentioned hitting the center of the club more.  The forgiveness of the club is one thing, but the ball flight is going to be more important.  Find one that gives you the ballflight you want.

And to be completely long winded, I find a difference between higher lofted/iron replacement hybrids and lower lofted FW replacement hybrids.  They just serve different purposes to me.

I can relate to this, and adds more weight to my previous comments on my preference for the larger hybrid.
