I'm a big guy. About 6'4 250, I'm curious whether or not other big men have any advice on their swing. My swing is inconsistent, not slicing 50 yards every time inconsistent but I want to get better. The reason I'm asking bigger guys is because all the instruction I see is generally made for someone who's smaller and has more room for their arms to hang loose. I have a big chest and gut so I'm a little more compact. Got any tips?

Is your chest so large that you cannot grip the club with your arms straight at address?

Bigger guys, smaller guys, kids, women… etc. should all be building toward the 5 Simple Keys. They're the true commonalities of the game's best players.

You can read more about them here:

The next recommendation is to visit the Member Swings forum and post a My Swing thread.

FWIW, I work with some larger dudes. Some are just out of shape, some are super weightlifters with muscular chests. They can all swing pretty "normally." There aren't really too many compensations necessary to play good golf just because you're larger.

It may feel that way.

First, Welcome to the site!

Second, Don't try to overswing to match the swing length another person can do. I would bet with your size and probably more muscle mass you can hit the ball just as far or farther with a shorter more compact swing. Which would be an advantage for you.

You got to take what your body can do and make it work for you.

If you want more specific advice I would start a My Swing thread here,

I am tall (6'6") and pretty heavy (250 lbs, chest 50"), though this is more evenly distributed body mass than a particlularly big stomache. I find it important to play with extended clubs (1-1.5") so that I am not crouching and cramping at address. The other thing that our local pro impressed on me is to go easy on the backswing: not taking the club too far back and round, but more "lifting" it once my hands get past shoulder height. I find this does help to straighten my shots.

The other thing that has helped recently is fitting an X-flex shaft to my driver. I maybe lose a little on distance (still hitting 250 yards upwards, though), but it definitely helps narrow the angle of deviation on my drives.

The most important thing for me has been to concentrate on keeping my swing smooth and slow - the long arc gives me enough clubhead speed to get good distance.

I would be interested to hear what experience other big guys have had with different shafts, particularly on the irons.

I'm 6'2 and hover around 300 lbs, but its not a hindrance. I have a big chest as well (not the stomach, though), but I don't find it really affects me all that much. Like Iacas said, it's probably something else besides your size. More likely other mechanical issues that are causing your slice.

I've found two things work for me. If you watch Kiradech Aphibarnrats swing, I have success like that but its inconsistent. I went to a pro and he said that I need to get a little steeper. I've lost maybe 2-3 yds an iron and maybe 10 yards off the tee but its much more consistent. I do need to get my clubs fitted for me, I've been using my brothers hand me downs my whole life.

    • Day 76 - Pretty sore today, so I opted for putting over my Stack session. Primary focus was on starting line, as my putting has been pretty poor this year.
    • Been a bit of delay in updates but I needed to come back east as my mom's health has taken a serious turn for the worse. In a 3 day span we learned she had a tumor to she has stage 4 cancer and stopped eating and drinking for the most part. She has had a rough 3 months but certainly didn't think we'd be at the point of setting up hospice for her. My mom was never into any sports really other than following the Red Sox because my dad was a big fan. She always cared about what we were involved in including asking about how golf went.  I have kept up with my 5 minutes of daily practice and will go to the gym here in NH tomorrow morning. Despite the somber nature of this trip my family has commented more than a few times about my weight loss so it's important to me to keep it up. I know my mom always wanted us happy in whatever we did so I'll continue with my fitness journey keeping that in mind.
    • Day 109- Putting drills on a putting green for 20 minutes.
    • Day 252: did a stack session. Did some slow rehearsal swings during breaks.
    • Day 82: 3/18/24 Tried a Stack session but could not certify my warmup. Finished with indoor chips and putting.
