Over the past couple months I've been playing and testing out STATE APPAREL's Competition shirt and Competition pants. @iacas just got his stuff so he will also be adding his thoughts after he gets a few rounds in with the clothes.

STATE APPAREL is functional golf clothing focused on the real conditions golfers face. The clothes incorporate materials that allow the golfer to clean their golf balls. clubfaces or their hands without needing to have a towel nearby. The towel-ish type fabric on the side panels of the shirt, cuffs of the pants and pockets of the pants can be used to wipe away blades of grass, dirt, or moisture from your equipment. Other sports like cycling have apparel that's specialized to their sport, STATE APPAREL is trying to do the same thing with golf. All of their garments are designed to be worn as a system, but can work just as well separately to meet a golfer's needs.

The clothes are made in San Francisco and very much a product for the weather in that area. The material of the pants and shirt are designed to keep you warm, dry and comfortable. I had to play in two tournaments recently in cold and wet conditions and the Competition pants were a lifesaver. Living in Souther California we have a different definition of rain than most of the country but it actually poured during one of my rounds and I never had to put on rain pants. They not only work as well as rain paints but are also lighter. Compared to your typical performance techy pair of pants, the Competition pants are thicker to provide more warmth but still look and fit like a nice modern pair of pants.

The Competition shirt and Competition pant that I tested had a solid, classic look to them, and the wiping panels are both functional and added some style The shirt is a comfortable fit with a little extra room around the waist. It's a shirt that will work for an average sized guy and even a larger dude. The arm portion is more fitted so you can show off your guns ;-)

For the wiping/cleaning aspect of the gear, I mostly used the pants to wipe my club and golf ball. Using the side panel of the shirt just didn't feel normal because I've never used my shirt to clean my ball. The fabric in the pocket of the Competition pants worked great for cleaning any debris off the ball. The felt-like material in the pants pocket are also handy for keeping my hands warm and dry The outer fabric is similar to a windbreaker, protecting you from wind, rain and cold.

The materials used, style and functionality is unique and provides a benefit to golfers. The clothes are also locally made in San Francisco.

STATE APPAREL is launching their first collection for Fall 2015 and is offering early access through their Kickstarter campaign. The campaign runs from June 1- June 30 , which coincides nicely with gifts for Father's Day, Graduation, or yourself. Here's the link to visit their Kickstarter campaign . Pics below from the Fall Collection below.

If anyone has any questions or comments please share them here.

Pant cuffs can be rolled up during play, rolled back down after the round to hide the debris.

Agree.  And the clothes all look nice too.  But my very first thought when seeing the pictures (specifically regarding the one of him wiping the muddy ball off with his pocket) was that some of that mud would fall right into his pocket.  I don't think it's the material of my current pants that's preventing me from using them as a towel, it's the fact that I don't want mud on or in them that's preventing it.

But I think that the side panels of the shirt would work well for that purpose.  Interested to here more about the fit and comfort.

Also:  Kickass logo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi everyone!! and thanks @mvmac for opening the discussion!! Thanks for all the great feedback and please keep it coming. We're a new golf brand based in San Francisco and we believe in listening to our customers to keep improving our products. Ultimately your satisfaction is our goal. @Golfingdad - we don't like mud on/in our clothes either. We think that's the job of the golf towel, another essential piece of golf equipment. Our clothes as equipment, are not a replacement, but rather a complement to the golf towel. Our clothes help with the pesky blades of grass, grains of sand, and dewy moisture, persistent problems of golf that affect performance, that are typical of San Francisco and sandy "linksy" golf destinations like Bandon Dunes and Pebble Beach. Our clothes are an on-the-spot solution that saves you from leaving your shot and going to your towel on your bag. After wiping away sand and grass, our unique fabric starts to dry and then the debris sluffs off on it's own. We did a lot of dirty testing and It's hard to believe, but you'll look clean and crisp after your round. In concept, we're equipping golfers to handle anything they encounter on the course. Our solutions keeps you in the shot and better focused on executing the shot. We're as much about a STATE of mind, staying in the zone, as we are about equipping golfers. Thanks for the logo love. Whether or not you're from California, remember it's a STATE of mind :)

The big question for me is the fit of the pants. All the awesome features aren't going to do much for me if my thighs feel constricted. Looks like a bit tapered leg from the pics but that may not be an issue. I generally need a relaxed fit to feel comfortable.

Crotch looks a tad tight too. B-) Joking! These look like great apparel, interested to see how the company moves forward. Do you have any distribution deals? Available locally in Canada?

Are these going to be in stores? I would find it hard to ever order pants or shirts online because I would never want to go through the hassle of figuring out if it fits me and then returning them ect..

I will let you know what I think. Mine just shipped. I don't really like tight arms/sleeves (I like really roomy shoulders), and I have larger thighs and calves so I'll let you know how the legs fit too.

For me they're comfortable and I have larger than normal thighs.

I think you can only get them direct through their website.

I'm sure @STATE APPAREL is working on it though. It's high quality stuff.

Up until now, fit's the most important thing to choosing golf pants that are comfortable and look good. we understand this and want to make pants for everyone, so we offer pants in a slim and straight fit. We outfit top high school programs and have seen down line men walk the fairways happily in size 38. Now, fit and function are the most important thing. We think we have both options covered :)

We're starting our retail distribution this fall with select premium resorts and private clubs in the USA. We hope to be in Canada soon. Our Kickstarter, launching on Monday, ships anywhere in the world and is a good chance to pickup some gear at 20-30% off our retail prices.

As an online company we've seen first hand that it's best to try before you buy. We've done trunk shows at Hualalai Four Seasons, Corde Valle, Google, and Facebook and it's an easy sell when you can see and touch. We're working on free shipping and returns to take the risk out of purchasing online. We're rolling out our first collection this fall to select premium resorts and private clubs. We hope to continue to grow so everyone can see and feel the benefits of our pants in person.

That's great! You understood my concern 100%.. I will keep my eyes open and maybe take a chance. Thanks for your reply.

Reviewed the draft of the Kickstarter.

Looks good - pants, shirt, sweater - got some closeups in the project.

Like the Logo, waiting for a good looking bucket hat.

Will pledge on Kickstarter since I will play in NorCal, NW, and the Northeast on occasion.

Bucket hat is on the road map :)

Thanks for your support @Mr. Desmond . We had the pacific coast in mind when we designed our signature Competition Pants. All we need for trips to Bandon.

Yeah, this was my first thought also, but the response from STATE is interesting.  It would definitely be worth a try.

And I thought the logo was supposed to be a graphical depiction of Jim Furyk's backswing.  Or one of @Golfingdad 's approach putts on our last TST SoCal outing.

    • This topic can be whatever you'd like it to be. If you're working with an instructor, you may have to mention it occasionally, but people will respect that and you can use this as a diary of sorts.
    • Look at Kevin trying to rationalize his small minority vote. 😄
    • It's all good, man. I appreciate the discussion.   The hole slopes right, towards the penalty area. That's the part just past the cart path that isn't mowed. You can land a ball on the fairway that ends up in it if the ground is firm enough.  Everything that's brown in the satellite image isn't rough. It's fescue, which even during this time of year is tall enough that just finding a ball in it can be hard. Bunkers might as have red stakes around them - I read that in a book, once. So having set that table, here's what the shot cone looks like if I try to play for what you're suggesting: I just don't see that as the optimal play. I need to get out of there with no worse than 5, not try to make 3 and end up with 6 or more. It's a short hole and my strength is in my iron play. I'm actually oddly not much better from 50-100 yards than I am from 100-150 yards. It's like a 4% difference in green success rate and 8' closer in proximity. I don't see that as worth putting trouble into play off the tee for.
