Well, the other day I just kind of blurted out that "I think my ball is getting a tan on one side."

Didn't go over too well. . .I wasn't even thinking when I said it.

Anyone else know what not so say from "experience"?

What does that even mean and why wouldn't it go over well? I'm missing something.

The way I interpret it, the comment was basically telling his playing partner he was playing too slow.

Ahhhh, ok, I missed that. Hell, what's wrong with that? I say good on ya Lihu. I usually tell slow players I encounter in my group that they'll improve by speeding up. Gives em a little incentive and works more often than not but I like your approach too.

Ive learned to just stop saying nice shot after my partner has made contact with a ball.... just wait until it lands.  Too often I end up looking like a dick because what I thought was a nice shot from contact ended up being a bad one.

Yes, slow play and still within the maximum bounds, but it was purely unintentional. Didn't mean to sound so insulting. . .

Ouch!

Sometimes, I blurt out something to the effect of ... that's a tough lie, that's going to be a tough shot, etc..   At least one person took it as a discouragement (of "you are not gonna make that" type).

Yeah, I think I've uttered these too. One person's landed in goose poop, and I blurted out something to the effect of "That stinks".

You really can't be too insulting when it comes to slow play.  Just sayin'.

I was playing in a team match last night at my club.  Two singles matches. . .my cart mate and I are on one team and the other cart is on the other team --- we each are playing head to head with a guy in the opposite cart.  This is our club's "executive" league.  I'd not previously met either of the guys we are playing against, but they were decent enough guys.

In any event, on our 6th hole of the 9 hole match, my partner makes the other guy putt out from 12".  Which is fine, I suppose, although these are supposed to be fun matches.  Somehow, the opponent drop kicks his putter from there and misses it.  At which point my cart mate breaks out 'the thing not to say':  "I kind of felt like a dick for making you putt that, but then you missed."

I was appalled. Either man up and own that you made him putt it, or just say nothing at all.

You're right, that's crude.  Lucky he didn't get punched.

If he didn't think that was funny, he deserved to hear it IMO!

I think the comments that get me in the most trouble are when I'm genuinely trying to be encouraging. I only really play with high handicappers so say someone gets on the tee with their driver and hits a worm burner but it goes 220 yards right in the middle of the fairway. They are huffing and puffing over the mishit and I'll say something like "I'd take that shot all day". I'm being genuine but sometimes it rubs people the wrong way, which I can kind of understand.

The only thing people say to me that really gets under my skin is when people suggest I break the rules. The last round I played with playing partners we were on a par 5 and I hit my drive 254 yards (pretty long for me) but unfortunately missed the right side of the fairway by about 15 feet and ended up in an almost dry creek bed between some gravel sized rocks. They were all saying things like "just toss it out" or "you don't have to play that". I did play it though. Took a mighty whack at it and popped it up off the bank and about 15 yards to forward to the edge of the fairway. Then I got comments like "whoa look out PGA tour" or "I hope that was worth ruining your club". I get that some people don't want to take that shot and don't mind using their foot (or hand) wedge. Personally I enjoy playing my ball according to the rules and knowing that what I scored was legit. Also I have a wedge in my bag that I bought for $3 at play it again sports just for playing shots where damaging my club is a possibility. I let the comments get to me and hit some bad shots and ended up with double bogey on the hole.

I'm pretty easy going and I don't mind getting ribbed over bad shots or joking around while playing. These particular comments just get to me. I know I'm not a tour player. I still take improvement seriously. Or more accurately working to improve is what gives me enjoyment out of golf. If and when I finally shoot a round in the 70's I want it to be because I worked hard to improve and make it there, not because I'm fudging the numbers and kicking out of trouble when I get in it.

I play about 75% of my rounds with a friend who is a +2 handicapper and will be playing college golf and I am one of those guys that tries to be encouraging and he will hit a shot and I'll be like go ball or I'll talk to his ball and he hates that. I have found to never talk to anyone's ball while it is in the air or still moving.

Also I sometimes say like good chip or good putt because for me the shots he hits are good but he will get so pissed off because his chip was still 4 feet from the hole and not his usual 1-2 feet.

Basically I have learned to not say anything when playing with very good players who are better then you.

If your playing partner was a friend, I wouldn't even think twice about it.  If he was a stranger...oh well, lesson learned and he'll get over it, nothing you can do now.

Amongst our group of friends, pretty much nothing is off limits.  We're downright brutal to each other, but everybody is okay with it and it's understood that it's all in fun.  On the rare occasions I play with strangers, I try not to comment on their shots/game much beyond "Nice ball", "Good par" or whatever, unless they show that they've got a sense of humor and enjoy a little banter.

Well, I have a new saying and I definitely will use it this coming weekend.  Does not bother me to say something like that when it comes to slow play.

I took the topic, " Things not to say to a playing partner ",  a little differently, like...

Who was that I saw your wife out with last night? -or-

Nice putt, Alice (on a putt that comes up short) -or-

The Texas Rules applies (on a drive that doesn't pass the ladies tee) -or-

Are you going to have to use the kids' college account (after they lose a big bet) -or-

I have an extra skirt in my bag (when they hit a short drive) -or-

Get out the scuba gear (on a shot that went into the water) -or-

Nice read on that putt (on a putt that breaks the opposite direction that you partner read) -or-

If I ever hit a shot like that, I'd put my clubs on eBay, and quit golf tomorrow
