I like to check in and out of TST and generally enjoy the banter and discussions.  One thing that I have seemed to notice are the complaints (warranted or not) that we as golfers have about people we have played with or other golfers.  This includes from hitting into people, talking during swings, etc.

So I'm taking my title of the post in a different direction.  What do WE do that tends to annoy the people we play with?  What habits do we have that cause our friends or partners to roll their eyes, complain or question us?  Please keep it away from anything score related or shot related.

#1     I always worry about being the cause of slow-play.  My bad habit is that I rarely take any practice swings because I am worried that I will be seen as "practice swing guy" and drag our round into the realm of slow play.  My usual partners often ask why I don't take any, etc.  and it makes me seem that I am trying to rush them.  I try to slow down and take one swing but by the third hole, it's back to my habit.

#2     I can't be the cart driver.  I just prefer my bag on the right hand side of the cart.  I don't know why.  It's just a weird thing I do and my friends look at me strange.  It's now become a game to them to see if they can get their bag in before I get mine in.

Things I do that probably annoy playing partners: - tell them to hurry the **** up. - walk to the next tee box before they are done farting around next to the green. - walk ahead and faster than them - politely refuse their offers to take gimmies - politely refuse their offers to just "move it over to the good grass" - politely refuse their offers to take a "do-over." The first 3 are only necessary if they are slow-pokes so I don't always do them. The second 3 shouldn't annoy them, but probably does because it makes them feel self-conscious about doing those things themselves, which they shouldn't. Play the game however you like, just don't brag to me about your "score" and FFS, keep up the pace! :-$

Just having fun on this EJ :-D .   Amazing thing about the above is that you can do all of the above in one hole.

On hole #1, you hit a drive into a deep rough and "refuse" to take a do-over.   When you reached the site that your ball landed (others may see it as unplayable), you "refuse" to move it over and hack it out 20 yards.  You get frustrated and "walk ahead" to hit your approach shot.  Miraculously, it falls just two feet off the hole but you "refuse" to take the gimmie and do the Aimpoint thingy and taps it in.  Then, you "walk to the next tee box" while your playing partners are still in the green.   As you depart, you asked them to "hurry" up.    Hole number 1 is done.

I'd like to think that I'm not an annoying golf partner, but I imagine there are little idiosyncrasies that annoy people, just like anybody else.  The two I can think of are closely related to the OP:

1)  I'm very conscious about our foursome/group being the cause of slow play.  I do always take a practice swing, but I play ready golf and am always keeping an eye on the group ahead of us and the group behind us.  I'm almost always the one in our group to say "We need to pick up the pace, we're falling behind", or "We need to let the group behind us play through".  I don't like to rush through the round or treat it as a race, but I don't want to be the group screwing around and being cursed by everybody behind us on the course either.

2)  I don't like being the cart passenger.  I always try to get my bag into the driver's side and anytime somebody asks if I want to drive or ride, I'm quick to say "I'll drive".  I don't make an issue of it if somebody else jumps in the driver's seat, but I'm just more comfortable as the driver for whatever reason.

Here are my top 2

- I may tend to talk a little too much, similar to Lee Trevino. For people who are serious and introspective about their game it can be a little annoying. For those who are just out to enjoy the day, I call it, "delightful banter."

- When golfing with the wife, I get disinterested. Sorry, but she can destroy my game, because I worry more about her than what I am doing. So, by being disinterested, I know I won't play well, and I accept my wife's game for what it is.... survive 9 holes and go to dinner.

Irons: #1 - Ping i3+; #2 - Hogan Edge  (both 4-pw, +1" shaft)

I golfed with a nice guy who was retired and in his 70s.  Every time I would putt... he would stand behind the hole, facing me, pointing his putter handle at the ground where he says I should aim.  If I made a putt... it was because of his guidance.  If I missed one, it was because I missed his mark.  I almost quit after 9.

Having strangers telling me, "you gotta hit it" when I'm 6" short on a putt is annoying.  My buddies can call me Alice or "Does your husband golf too?"... it doesn't bother me at all, but a stranger makes it obnoxious.

When I'm playing poorly I'm not a good partner, constantly talking about why I missed that shot or what's creating my issues. I do this only with friends. If I have a bad round with strangers, I'm pretty closed lipped, no banter for the most part. When I'm playing well, I'm a fkn joy to play with.

--I walk a lot so when I'm in a cart I have a hard time paying attention to the other person's ball.  My best friend will not let me drive the cart because many times I will just drive right past his ball to mine...

--I'm also a scatter brain sometimes.  I will forget clubs and other things on the green and have to go back for them.  Happens less now because I walk more.

Nope, I'm pretty much just delightful to to play with.  The only thing that might annoy someone is that I never play for money.

But then again, what the hell do I know?

Difficult question. When I picked up the game, I could be euforic when I hit a good shot, and get mad when I hit a bad one. I played with a nice women and she pointed it out to me. She didn't like it. So I quickly learned to controll it. I also tend to get a bit nervous, when my playing partners are chitchatting and (in my view) are losing pace with the group in front. Or the group behind us has to waite a bit to long (again in my view). You can take youre time, but we have to walk with pace. I might be a bit to harsh on that one. I never, never, give advice about how to put, to swing etc. I am not a swing guru/teacher whatever. But sometimes I think I am a mohikan who keeps his mouth shut. But I do get so much unaniem advice or see it around me, and most of it, you can Throw in the garbage can. I do give a compliment when somebody hits a good shot. But not all the time. No reason to be over polite. Same with a bad shot. Most of the time I keep still, because the player already knows he hit a bad one. No need to confirm that. A bit sloppy, but I am not a rule guy. I think I know the big picture and the more common rules, so if asked, I sometimes have no answer. The rules are meant to be fair, so I try not to give myself any slack. I modestly think I am a nice partner to play with. Like to play happy golf, and if someone wants to play from a better lie, go ahead, it doesn't bother me. Do not like the submarine in an official tournament. But who does? I had one bad experience with someone who couldn't keep up with my score, and started cheating. He was loudmouthing and got under my skin. Which irritated me even more. I have bad eyes and wear contact lenses. Unfortunately, I can not see all the balls, a white ball in the sun or clouded sky. I always warn my fellow players up front so they know. The last thing, somehow I find the ball from my fellow players better than my own, which bothers me sometimes.

How many steps do you get? I walked the other day, used my phone, recorded around 16,000 steps but I played 2 balls. Curious what a Fitbit records.

Walking "part time" since I do use a cart with my playing partner I get on average 9000 steps ...

    • Fair   My uneducated thought: the big miss is the penalty area. If you want to optimize score, missing into the bunker (likely 5) is better than missing right into the penalty (possible 6). With that, your strategy seems sound and if you hit a committed shot, you get a bunker 5% of the time, take your medicine and hopefully get a putt for par but accept bogey. You may find yourself in a penalty situation 2-3% of the time and accept the associated outcome. The vast majority of the time though you are giving yourself a good approach shot into the green.
