I've been Playing Golf for:

20 Years

My current handicap index or average score is:

12.4

My typical ball flight is:

High Fade

The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is:

Straight pull or Pull slice

Its seems quite apparent that my backswing is way too long and I'm also coming over the top.  I would appreciate any tips or drills to work on.  I will attempt to post a couple head on videos as well.

Videos:

Here is Driver swing DTL

Here is 7 iron swing DTL

Not swing related, but how tall are you?! I'm no expert, but your head movement stood out to me. http://purestrike5sk.com/videos.php  - Key #1

I'm 6'6" tall. My clubs are 1" longer and 4 degrees upright. I have been working on trying to keep a steady head, but to have a tendency to slide to my right on my backswing.

I'm playing a 2 man best ball tourney at Barefoot - Davis Love course on Thursday. I'm going to have my playing partner video a few swings of mine on the course, just to see how different my "driving range" swing is from my actual "tee-off" swing. I have reason to believe my actual golf shot swing will be dialed down a little from the range session.

Hi, I am a nobody and I like it. Put those two images and you get the perfect set up for your driver. I love my driver. So upper body at 001 second DTL DRIVER and lower body 005 DTL 7 iron. All the rest doesn't count because setup is most important piece. When you then setup like 001+005, hit some bombs out there for me as well. The ball goes where the left shoulder is pointing. I love the driver face position with the ball. Same as me.

I appreciate the feedback. Just so I understand what you are saying...take the lower body position from the 7 iron swing and the upper body position from the driver swing freeze frame, and use those positions as my initial Driver set up?

@MyrtleBeachGolf how is your ballstriking? Are there any contact issues other than just hitting the occasional pull?

Ball striking is solid. If I miss a little, it may be slightly thin, but it's rare. I'll try to record a couple swings off the grass of a driving range without a blocking wall. Should be easier to see contact. Plus, much better feedback hitting off a fairway than a horrid mat. I just took a quick photo of my 8 iron so you can see where most of the wear has occurred. It's certainly not a dime size mark in the dead center of the club face, but I usually make decent contact. After watching the videos of the DTL swings I do feel like I'm hunched over way too far. I may have to figure out how to stand up straighter throughout the swing. Would that help me stop coming over the top? Stand up straighter, raise my hands at address??

Yes.

I m reading "raise my hands". stop there. Never do that. Tell me which others sport you play/played in the past and I try to come up with some analogies. I m a funny dude, take it as you like:

life is beautiful while playing golf, isn't it ? . You need to have fun and be confident, driving range is like working, f.that. Get a membership in a private club or just play less and choose those days like mondays, tuesdays to go around a medium to difficult golf course (bunkers, uneven lies, not too many trees or bushes). Forget driving range, build you bad habits. Never hit irons on a mat, it will compromise your swing . If you can hit max. 2 balls every time, no more and walk.Don't put, just chip from around the green, remember you are practising as if you are at the driving range. You can't lose focus and concentrate on putting.

Driver, most important club in the bag (IMO)

-Any Driver of a major brand is doing the job, don't change it till you are hitting it well. For your build and swing should be high shots carrying at least 200 meters with no wind and a soft premium balls.

-If you have carpet at home, let it sit the head naturally on the floor and rest the shaft on a couch. Check on the web or magazine your specific driver head how does it rest (if not hover). Replicate. Adjust it as should be and you will learn visually how the toe is looking from front view (you need your bum on the ground, sorry for that), back and top view. Same story for the heel.  When you are hitting the Driver use a wood tee (cheaper better). Start remembering if the tee brakes and where it brakes. Don't use plastic tees, no feedback A wood golf  tee for driver use should last you at least 1 round.

Hit the driver as fast as you can (not hard as you can) loosing balance,  than adjust. You must experience the maximum speed (even braking the engine) to know the limit.

When you are behind, and repeat behind the ball at the driving range with grass. (I m sure you won't listen my advice of just play a golf course :-) )... and the ball is on a wood tee, you are confident because you have 2 fundamental of your own swing:

- a good set up (don't need to be perfect)

- swing limit

Pick the direction you want the ball starting, take a reference point (high tree at the horizon, a mark 2 meter in front of your tee) sit the club as you studied at home (deeply), set up around the club. then you take the grip you prefer. All is set, check your left shoulder for last alignment and let it go baby. Game on.

The pre routine should be 1 practice shot (2 if you didn't like the feeling) all behind the ball, focusing on where the ball will land (20 meters circle), visualisation of the ball flight, reference point and absolutely no grip defined. From when you place the ball on the tee to the set up ready to go position anything in between 30-40 sec. If you have mates around you making noise or not moving away delay and ask them to take a different spot. Very important focusing on what you are doing with no distractions. (Maybe I am stating the obvious but golf to me  is a mental game first, you need a focused positive state of mind).

Let me know the sports you are interested to give you the feelings on the swing

With a mountain of respect, I have to say, I was looking for some specific advice on ways to improve, and this kinda sounds like some medicine man Mumbo Jumbo?

Yes, there are a few things that don't quite look right:

-Backswing is way too long, as you've noted

-You do seem a bit hunched over at impact, but this may not be that important, hard for me to say

-You have pretty bad early extension (if you look at your body at impact, especially with the driver, you're practically standing up straight

-You come over the top with a steep downswing (as you've noted)

A good place to start might be here: How to Draw the Golf Ball (or How to Stop Slicing)

Dude, no offense, but are you just making this stuff up?
