This past weekend was the club championship at my CC, and it was the first competitive stroke play event I've ever played in.  Off the bat I'll say I love the format, not in small part due to the fact it feels like "legit" golf, i.e., watching the scores come in, seeing two or three day totals, etc.

I think I did ok for my first time: shot 86-85 and took 3rd overall in my flight.  On the one hand I'm stoked to have "placed", on the other, I think I could have won had I done some stuff differently, so I'm interested to hear from guys who've played a lot of these events how they approach them compared to regular tourneys (which are for the most part all match play).  Looking back, I think club choice cost me at LEAST 6 strokes (I finished 6 back of the leader . . . ).

What else do you change in stroke play?

I'm pretty sure most tournaments are stroke play which is just like any other round of golf, just added pressure. You make decisions that you believe will yield the lowest score without undue risk.

All the tournaments hosted by my men's club are stroke play events, with the exception of the annual match play flighted championships. I agree with you though, that a multi day stroke play event is pretty cool. I posted about my club championship experience last year. The main takeaway I had was how difficult it was for players at our level to "hold it together" for 3 consecutive rounds. Inevitably, over the course of 54 holes, you will have at least one (and likely many) major screw-ups. In a big tournament, those mistakes can feel like the end of the world and can compound themselves quickly. I really think the key to success is to be able to reset after a bad shot or a bad hole. Last year, I was the leader after day 1, but shot myself out of contention on day 2 with a 90 (net 81). By about the 14th hole, I figured I was out of it and had checked out mentally. If I could have just reset myself down the stretch with a few pars and finished closer to 86-87, I still would have been in striking distance of the leader. It's hard not to feel devastated by a triple bogey, or a string of doubles - but when you think about the fact that every competitor in the field is likely to have at least one really bad hole or really bad stretch, it puts things in perspective. I'm through round 1 of 3 in this year's championship for our club. Again, my opening round has put me in a really good position. Win or lose, this year I'm committed to remaining focused over the final 36 holes.
