I believe it is but I think I will be an old man before it happens!

Physical side:

I think golfers are close to the physical limits of how far they can hit the ball and play the game. Sure there are a few guys like Rory and Bubba that stand out from the crowd but as my grandfather always said - 'Putt for Dough, Drive for Show'. A golfer can only get so big and hit it so hard before their accuracy levels deteriorate or worse still, they do long term damage to their body (Tiger).

Equipment/Course side:

There must be some inflection point in the (near) future where the rules officials / golf course owners realize that course economics do not work on 8,000 yard golf courses. Sure there will always be a few exceptions but on the whole people like to have fun playing golf. I know very few golfers who enjoy 500+ yard par 4s or 250+ yard par 3s.

Equipment manufactures understandably want to sell you the next biggest and best driver but I think golfers realize that they are never going to hit it 250+ yards no matter what you put in their hands.

That comes to the most important part of the game that pretty much everyone ignores!

The mental side:

Most professional golfers on any given day can shoot the best round of a tournament. So why is it that some pro's rank number one in the world and some rank 256th (Robert Rock, just incase you wanted to know). It is of course the mental side that really differentiates the best.

This is where I think the most progress will be made in the next 20 years. This is how golfers will be able to achieve the magical -18. Golfers have been close but none have made it past -12 in a full top league pro tour event. Pro's over the last number of years have started to embrace the mental side of the game much more. Celebrity psychologists such as Bob Rotella has a queue of Pro's waiting for him on the putting green before every tournament.

I think Pro's will lead the way on experimenting with the mental side of the game much more. Don't be surprised to see meditation tents at a PGA Tour event by 2050 :-D .

Love to hear your thoughts.

Regards,

Dave

No. Not gonna happen on anything resembling a course of normal length/difficulty. I also don't consider a small handful of 59's to be even close...

A 54 in golf in golf is possible, but I doubt I will ever read about it. I was part of a 4 man scramble that carded a 57 some years ago.

One person shooting a 54 would need to be very lucky, and even have more than one HIO on the card I would guess. I think I read some where that there have been 3 or 4,  55 scores recorded, but I might be wrong

I think is Lowest Score Wins, the drive for show putt for dough was shown to not be true.

I'm with David this will never happen, unless you're in a scramble with mulligans and string.

The theoretical low score is 50 (without holing out from off the green).  Eagle the par 5's (-8) and birdie the rest (-14).

As the conditioning and equipment get better, the courses get longer, fairways narrower, and greens quicker.  So the pros are constantly chasing a moving target.  Even 59 is rare, so no, I don't think anyone will get to -18.

One of golf’s greatest feats is to shoot one’s age.

So, imagine how spectacular a day Kim Jong-Il had back in 1994. The North Korean dictator, who died on Saturday of heart failure at age 69, scorched the 7,700-yard Pyongyang Golf Course in a stunning 38-under par, 34.

Ryo ishikowa shot 58 in a tourney in Japan, I had read that it was on a little shorter course than a typical PGA course. Is it possible? Yes is likely, well I doubt we will ever see it on the PGA tour event.

If you eagle all four par 4's, then you give some leeway for the tough par-3's. I say it could be possible. As of right now

From those who have shot a 59 or 60, there has been

3-13 under pars

9-12 under pars

There has been 6 - 59 rounds and 29 - 60 rounds.

Though Tiger did shoot a 13 under 61 at Firestone in 2013.

In the Guinness World Record book, Richard Wallis shot a 59 at the PGA Southern Open OOM Pro-Am in the United Kingdom.

http://www.pga.com/news/golf-buzz/golfers-score-certified-world-record

As of right now a -14 is the lowest round ever scored by a professional in a tournament.

One round of -14 out of how many rounds of golf played, lets just say in the last 60 years. The earliest record for the 60 shot was in the 50's.

It's possible, but the odds are so much against the golfer.

Thanks for the comments. It would be interesting if the PGA held a tournament with the aim of reaching -18. Let's just say they set the course up easy and limited it to 7,000 yards max. I think it would make for an exciting couple of days!

Good grief, that would be boring. Long iron/wedge all day long. Why not just have a putting contest and get it over with? No thank you. There's a reason I look forward to the Majors every year. Especially the U.S. Open.

If you take Jack Nicklaus's career best ball at the Masters on each hole, he'd have turned in a 48. So, all it takes to break 50 is not only to play your best, but play Jack Nicklaus's best at each hole.

Would be nice to know what tee's he played from ;)

Even if he did play the 6600 yard course. Compared to something on PGA Tour level course, he's looking at an equivalent of a 59.

Still great round

    • I did read the fine print tonight. It said replace with “similar features & function”.  8 yeas ago my purchase had features that today are available on the lower end models and the current version of my model has more “bells & whistles” than what I got 8 years ago.  So I am thinking they honored the agreement and I can’t argue the offer. since getting a credit for the full purchase price all I am really out over the past 8 years was the cost of the extended warranty, which was less than a low end  treadmill would have cost me. now the question is which model to replace with.  I’ll stay with Nordic Track or I forfeit the $1,463 credit so I will get Nordic Track.  And they honored the warranty and were not hard to work with which is a plus.
    • Generally speaking, extended warranties are a terrible deal and should almost always be avoided. They are a huge profit center for the companies that offer them, which should tell you almost everything you need to know about how much value most consumers get when purchasing them.  This is correct, and the old adage applies - only buy insurance when you can't afford the loss. This usually doesn't apply to most consumer goods.  To your second question, no I don't believe the offer is fair. They are replacing it, but it is not being replaced at "no cost to you". Since the amount being disputed (over $500) is non-trivial, I would probably push the issue. Don't waste your time on the phone with a customer service agent or a supervisor. They have probably given you all they have the authority to do. Rather, I would look at the terms of your agreement and specifically legal disputes. The odds are you probably agreed to binding arbitration in the event of a dispute. The agreement will outline what steps need to be followed, but it will probably look something like this.  1. Mail the Nordic Track legal department outlining your dispute and indicate you are not satisfied with the resolution offered.  2. Open up a case with the AAA (American Arbitration Association), along with the required documentation. 3. Wait about 4-5 weeks for a case to be opened - at which point someone from Nordic Track's legal department will offer to give you the new model at no cost to you.  They certainly don't want to spend the time and energy to fight you over $500. 4. Enjoy your new Nordic Track at no cost to you. I recently entered binding arbitration against a fairly large and well known company that screwed me over and refused to make it right. In my demand letter, I made a pretty sizeable request that included compensation for my time and frustration. Once it hit their legal department, they cut me a check - no questions asked. It was far cheaper to settle with me than to send their legal team to defend them in the arbitration.
    • I never thought of looking at it on multiple purchases like you said.  Yes, the extended may help me on 1 or 2 items but not the other 5 or 6.
    • Day 84 - Forgot to post yesterday, but I did some more chipping/pitching.    Back/neck were feeling better today, so I did a much overdue Stack session.
