For a scramble I like to have the more "reliable" or better player hit first but putt second.

Good advice.

Playing with my wife for a similar scramble tournament and will follow the above.   Although, in some areas, it's hard to tell who is better (we started playing golf at the same time).

In scramble play, do you mark your putting position so that the 2nd player can putt from same exact place?   Or, do you casually drop it where the 1st player just putted from?

What is 'best shot?'  Not heard of that format. Is it a 2 player 'best-ball,' or 2-player 'scramble' event?

I'm assuming it is best ball. Just played one of those this past weekend. I didn't think there was any real strategy though. For a scramble, I usually play it D-C-B-A off the tee unless for example the D player is a bomber, then I have him tee off after a ball is in play. I usually putt last. I'm a pretty poor green reader, but I can hit it where I'm aiming. So, if someone shows me the line, I get pretty good.

I'm assuming he means scramble. There really isn't much of a strategy for best ball.

Here's a strategy question for a 2 man best ball. Is there anything against the rules in having the "B" player who is "out of the hole" purposely putt his ball over to where player A putt is. And then putt first to give player A a look at the line? It seems extreme, but is it legal?

It's legal, but very douche-like. My teams have often putted out of order to give the other a read. Not sure that is legal though. In match play, your opponent has control of your ball on the green. For instance, in order to not allow the person with a ball out of the hole a chance to show the line (like your example), your opponent could give you that putt before you putt. You have to take it and not putt. Never pressed it because these are for fun.

I played in a competitive 2 man best ball (stroke play) tourney the other day. This situation occurred accidentally and it got me to thinking about it as a strategy.
