I was talking to my coach and he was telling me that the only difference between me and the pros right now is that the pros know exactly how far they hit all those clubs.  So we went to the driving range and he stood out there as i hit golf balls so he could measure.  Teh range balls look beat up but they are pinnacle golds.  I was hitting my 5 iron about 400 feet (yes feet, we ARE in America) on the range.  But when I got on the course and played wiht my game balls, Dunlop ProZ ecks, I was hitting my 5 iron 376 feet on average.  Has anybody else noticed that the range balls tending to go a lot farther?  My old pen pal said my coach was prob just giving me wrong distances but I don't think so because he is really good at eyeballing distances adn guessing peoples weight

Well first of all yards are the same measure of unit as feet. Maybe its meters your confusing? Second no offense but if your only hitting your 5 iron 400 "feet" theres more then a couple things that are keeping you from being on equal footing with a pro ;-). On a serious note range balls usually go shorter then a decent ball you would be using on the course. Best advice i could give you would be to get a rangefinder or to spend some time on a simulator that can give you some accurate numbers. Good luck and hitem straight.

I can certainly 'feel' a difference between the range balls and new golf balls I'd use on the course - I usually find that my course golf balls feel better off the face of the club and travel further.

I suppose striking the ball on a range mat compared to making a divot on the fairway can also make a difference?

5 iron 400 feet -- 133 yards?  And I thought I was a short hitter!  My 5 (hybrid) goes at least 150!

You can try getting a GPS app like Golfshot and track your yardages per club on the course.

Thinking the same thing. I do not see how you can be a 2 hc and hit a 5 iron 133yds which is my pitching wedge and I am not a long ball hitter.

Regardless, get a rangefinder and hit to flags on the range and when playing a practice round hit 2-3 balls into the green when you know the yardage.

I hit my 5I that far when I miss it.  I can half top it and still roll it 130 yards up the fairway.  I have no idea where the OP is coming from on this.  Even as short as I hit these days, I still hit my 8I about 135.

Depends on the range. Some ranges use balls that go shorter. You are only talking about 8 yards of difference.

Please convert to yards next time, we are in America ;)

If you can only hit your 5 iron 400 FT then you coach is wrong on the difference between you and the pros. Right now the difference between you and the pro's is 60 yards between their 5 iron and your 5 iron.

I measure distances in furlongs.

So does the speedometer in your car read out in furlongs per fortnight?

Are there "Pinnacle Gold" range balls?   I've seen "Pinnacle" range balls but never seen Pinnacle Gold ones.    For this post, I will assume the OP meant to say Pinnacle range balls which one of my ranges exclusively uses.

I find Pinnacle range balls to go slightly shorter than normal balls and have no problem deriving my club distance with it.   However, it is easy to hit shorter in field with real ball, at least for me.  At range, I tend to hit out of my shoes more.   In field, more often than not, I hit (un)consciously 80% shot to control accuracy.   Whatever distance I'd gain with real ball is lost there.  Also, I hit out of mat at range and it is more forgiving in distance on missed shots.   In field, a missed shot, even a slight one, can reduce distance more.

Based on hitting range balls at the range and then hitting a bunch of regular balls on the same range at least the one range I frequent I would say the range balls were flying about 10% shorter across the board...

A second range that I sometimes goes to the distances seem to be pretty much the same.

Isn't the OP somewhat infamous around here for posting nonsense?

Shhhhh, don't ruin the fun :-P

    • So it's been a bit but things have been busy on my end. I have had a couple of range sessions lately and the first wasn't great but the last went really well. I started concentrating on just getting my shoulder behind the ball and it has made a world of difference. I think prior I had been thinking way too much over the ball but once I get my grip and setup done it's just one thought. My strikes were much more pure and distance despite a strong wind was very good.  I weighed in yesterday at 235. This journey started 2 years ago in May when I stepped on the scale and had 321 staring back at me. My knees feel so much better and feel stronger than I have in years. Not sure what weight I'll land on and try to maintain but I'm really pleased with the progress.
    • Two things I bring up when it comes to this discussion. One is if you have let's say two towns next to each other, one has a population of 10,000 people and the other has a population of 1,000 people. Let's also say that they never play golf against each other. Only among themselves. In the first town, you have one guy who has won 15 events, then a couple of guys who won 6, a couple who won four and a bunch of people who won three, two and one events. In the second town, you have one guy who won 18 events, then a guy who won 11, a guy who won 9, a guy who won 8, a couple who won 7, a couple who won 3-5 and then a few 2s and a few 1s. Who's the best golfer? It's possible it's the guy who won 18, but it's pretty unlikely. Far more likely to be the guy who won 15 in the much bigger town.  In the same way, I view the fact that there is more parity in the 1990 and onwards world than there was in the pre 1990 world as a plus for Tiger. It's much harder to stand out if the fields are deeper, stronger, better. If there are a handful of players who win all of them, that tends to suggest weakness to me, not strength. The other thing is Ed White. Harvey Penick talked about him in one of his books. Ridiculously good at the game, but no one ever heard of him, because he got a job and didn't play professionally. There was no money in it and he needed security, so he took a job that paid him steadily. No clue how many people there are out there like him, but if he was around today, he'd be playing pro golf for sure. If he had played professionally, Penick sure seemed to think he'd have been one of the best of all time. Fred Haas played him in a college match and got stuffed. 40 years later he walked into Penick's shop and saw Ed White's picture on the wall and, after a full career playing pro golf, he said that Ed White was the best player he ever saw. Those 40 years would presumably have included at least some of Jack. I can see why people might say Jack is the GOAT. I don't agree, but I can at least understand why they say it. IMO there is no argument you can make for anyone other than Tiger to be the BOAT though. At least not yet.
    • A good option is to play the Par 3 courses. after playing an 18 -hole round. The Par 3 courses have 18 holes, we usually played only 9 holes after playing 36 holes on each of the trips we had. You may want to check out Grand National while you're in the middle of Alabama. I enjoyed Oxmoor Valley and Ross Bridge courses which are a short drive north.
    • In August, I am playing the World Am in Myrtle Beach. I do not know which courses yet, but should be a blast. Aside from that, those are the only golf trip plans, unless I play while on vacation in Destin in June.
