I need some advice for clubs for my wife - she has been playing a couple of times a week with me and I would like to upgrade her cheap Wilson irons. She is not a strong swinger so game improvement irons would be ideal. I also believe she would definitely benefit from hybrids for the 4,5 and 6.

I have found a couple of good alternatives but I am not sure which way I want to go:

RockBottomGolf has Cleveland 588 MT Ladies 4-PW for $319 - if I get these I need to get a couple of hybrids also
Dicks has the Cobra Baffler Hybrids/Irons - 4-6H, 7-PW for $499
Dicks has the Adams A12 os set for $399

Anyone familiar with these sets? Any advice - I would like to stay under $500...

How tall is your wife?

If she is 5-foot-2 or under, she probably wants to try out petite women's clubs. These clubs have shafts an inch shorter than standard, and also have a somewhat flatter lie. Examples of club models with petite variants are the Callaway Solaire Gems, the Wilson Profile XLS (comes in tall, standard and petite), and the Adams Idea Petite.

Regardless of height, she needs to get fitted for the clubs. Even a basic static fitting will help. This measures clubhead speed (for shaft flex), lie angle, shaft length and grip thickness.

She needs to test-hit the clubs to make sure she likes them, and then get (at least) a static fitting.

5' 3" - I would not call her athletic but not really non-athletic either - very much in the middle - not a very fast swing speed either.

She already has Maltby LTech woods I had made for her - 3W, 5W, 7W and 9W that she likes, but crappy irons

We are going to Dick's tonight to swing the baffler XL and Adams a12 os sets - they seem to be well regarded as game improvement irons...

My wife is only 4-foot-9, and last year we considered L Tech clubs for her. She ended up getting the Adams Idea petites. Adams and the local Golf Galaxy did an excellent job of getting her a custom fit.

Looks like you're on the right track for the irons and hybrids.

(Or, she could always tap Maltby for irons and hybrids).

She swung the Bafflers and the Adams and really likes the Adams a12 os set. Dicks only had the set on the wall so discounted it 10% - $360 for the Adams a12 os set - irons/hybrids all set - now for a lesson or two for her :-)

A few years ago, I bought my wife a full (from SW to golf bag) Adam's set that came with a Chipper.  I think I paid $450 or so.   The chipper immediately improved her short game significantly.   She didn't like the driver so I got her one from Callaway.

BTW, most ladies don't need a full 14 club set.   Does she need 3 hybrids for example?   Many "sets" come with less number of clubs than what you find in men's set.   This can reduce the total cost of the upgrade.

One of the best sets I ever saw for the recreational female golfer was the Callaway Gems (circa 2004). It came with a driver, 7W, 5H, / 7i, 9i and SW / chipper and putter.

My wife got fit for the Adams Idea petite set last year. It came with Driver, 3W, 5W and 7W, 4H and 5H, and 6-PW, SW and putter. The driver is only 12º loft, and she can hit the 5W farther and much more reliably than Driver. Next year, we may get her fitted for a 15º driver, available from a couple of sources.

For your wife, two hybrids might do it - unless she really likes hybrids. So how can she find out?

Some of the women in our club who play regularly in leagues and in scrambles are quite savvy about golf clubs and what they need. A half dozen actually went off to a weeklong golf camp together, working on ther swings and getting ideas on how to redo their club mix.

Still, golfdom could do more to help more casual women golfers find what they need. If more golf shops had more women who were trained as clubfitters, this would help. Most women working at golf shops never get past cashier stage.

There are enough men who don't need 14 clubs either... But to your point, I agree beginner golfers in general could start with less clubs in the bag and build their set as their game/needs grow. Adams makes great beginner sets, hard to go wrong with them.

    • You all are right, its not that big of an issue, I'll leave it alone, especially after looking at that picture of Tigers beat up putter. But I also noticed the small circle worn on the sweet-spot where he hits it every time, I definitely don't have one of those. Thanks for the replies
    • Committing to one brand of ball this year - Snell MTB Prime X, the 5 doz. pack. Like how they perform for me. At $18/doz., can live with cover scuffing. Iron regripping with GolfPrice MCC+4 Teams std. in red/navy. May be retiring Odyssey Dual Force after 30 yrs. Seems like I can't get it to the hole anymore. Kind of light and has lots of toe hang. My reg. group's hounding finally wore me down.    From Callaway preowned - trying out the Odyssey Tri-Hot 5K in double wide (less toe hang) and triple wide (face balanced). Both also noticeably heavier...we shall see.
    • WOW, it looks like he has been hitting stones with that putter to put all of those nicks into it.  I can't see how a ball would cause many those dings.
    • I'm fighting a knee as well as a foot so I "Feel your pain".  Luckily for me the PT is helping at this time and I am hoping knee surgery is not imminent.  Best of luck to you.
