I've been a bowler for most of my adult life, it's been my sport of choice for many many years. I've become quite skilled at it, however this summer my league was canceled and I decided instead to take up golf, knowing I would be terrible at it but would hope to improve. The good news is despite all the grumbling about how expensive golf is, I find it no worse than bowling, at least as a beginner. What I'm finding hard to deal with is the wild swings in consistency I experience. Yesterday afternoon my son and I went to hit a couple buckets at the range and I topped everything, it was miserable. Then today I go play 9 at the local executive and shoot 37(+6) my best score ever by several strokes. With bowling, I was terrible, then I gradually became mediocre, then very good. With golf I am terrible on Saturday, and mediocre on Sunday, and then terrible again on Monday. I've had professional lessons, and they help, and I know more consistency will come with time, but it's just so wild in the beginning it's no wonder so many people quit. Long story short, golf is too hard, but I personally will try to stick with it, at least through the summer.

I was a state bowler in high school and averaged 190+ for most of my teenage years. Golf is way harder. Like not even a contest.

Welcome to the game of golf.

Frustrating as heck... you're working on one thing, and forget the others ... so you can't hit squat.  Well, you're not going to if you are thinking about one piece.  Work on that one issue, then take a step back and remember to put it together for a few swings.

There are all kinds of tricks, gimmicks, snake oil solutions, tips and gadgets to improve your game.

The only one I ever found to work was to hit more golf balls.

Keep at it and you will find your swing.

Golf is hard, but that's one of the reasons many become addicted, at least for me, I have no interest in learning how to bowl really well and then doing that every time I play, that sounds really boring, I want the challenge of knowing that I may not play golf well tomorrow, it will take everything I got, that's exciting to me, because when it works and I play well it's very rewarding, like crack open a bottle of good scotch rewarding, love that about golf.

I highly recommend some lessons at this stage. It helped me tremendously!

@cupcakus I understand. May I share my progression of about 5 years playing with serious leg injuries, once temp paralyzed on left side? 1. Moved to golf course condo without ever playing. Pro said do not hit balls without first taking lesson. Check. Cost of lesson payoff better than bad round of golf and lost balls. 2. Worked on contact. Worried less about scores although I wanted to par everything! Wasn't till I changed mindset to try and make bogey holes did the pars start mixing in. 3. Surgeries, each of last 4 years, would work on wedges, sand, two hand, one hand, all surfaces. Over things. Developed my tempo. I was real quick and try and over power the ball. I think this helped the most and helped cut the strokes. 4. Weekly worked on putting to a point a never tighten up over a putt. Miss them but never fear them. Even won a contest. My point to this is to set small goals, and try and see progress in something. At first, I had difficulty getting out of the rough and what club to use. Guess where I spent my practice time? So many players I see hit right then try and go for the green from the rough (very tall and thick here) and then follow the rough all the way up right, for example. Adds strokes.

I have been playing for 40+ years. The past Friday I shot a 1 under 69 and then a 19 over 90 on Sunday. My advice is just shake off the bad days.

Others have said it but it bears repeating often:  lessons, practice, and patience and required for learning to golf.

As hard as the game is, the infinite variety of golf, makes the effort totally worth it.
