I just received the pairings via email for Monday evenings 16 team two person playoffs. As the #5 seed but having my partner injured the last few weeks has me thinking of withdrawing to give our spot to another team. The competitive side says play on as a single and the other side says it's a two person league. However, the league director just made the parings knowing the conditions and we have been hovering between 3-5 half the season and I've played several matches singular already. Got to get my mind right.

Final update. Got to the course at 3:30 to warm up and was informed I was not eligible to play. Interestingly they had us paired on the starting sheet emailed out 3 days ago, knowing I played alone coming into finals. Partner severely injured hand. No substitute provision was made and no single player vs two was the league ruling although allowed in league. First time playing this league and was solicited late by club pro (2 days before) to make league even at 32 teams. Heck, if I'd known that I couldn't play (at least call me and not suprise me at the course) the last 4 weeks there was no chance to advance maybe I would have played differently. Not a chance on that, or fair to the other teams who would not benefit by not receiving points. However, this is probable the correct ruling, but then if so, what about the teams I knocked down in standing holding playoff position awaiting seeding? I know I lowered the first place team, and then knocked out the 16th team maintaining my 5 spot. After all they can't have it both ways...can they? Annoyed, and out of the hunt. :-\

Damn... that sucks!  They should have never put you on the pairings sheet if they knew your partner was injured.  So... then, what happened?  Did the team you were supposed to play earn a 'bye'?

Sorry you got yourself ready only to have that kind of a let down.

I've been there before.  I played in a club that had a similar set of rules.  My partner caused problems and removed himself from the team.  I played as a single for the rest of the year, earned my way into the playoffs, but didn't get a spot because I hadn't played the minimum number of rounds required with my partner.

It was disappointing, but... those were the rules.

Keep your head up!

Well I'm glad you responded @Fairway_CY. Your correct, I should not have received a pairing especially when partner went into the club and show the missing tip of finger several weeks earlier trying to set up a replacement partner. It looked like the sheet was full last night when I made them look at pairings and my name was excluded this time. Funny thing was as I was walking into the pro shop they all scrambled to other areas like when a light goes on and cockroaches are present. Though it was strange until told I was not playing. I'm pretty aggressive but I held my temper as golfers were checking in...and without saying a word I walked out, leaving the debate for another day face to face. At this club, it wouldn't surprise me if friends hadn't been moved in or up. Still steaming I drove to my close by practice course and played a round with a nice fellow from a country club preparing for his playoffs today. In the pro shop talking to my pro friend about it...he muttered all the cuss words for me and shared a few things that I had suspected. Others had had bad experiences there also and now play league there. Told him he's got a new player as he invited me to play league earlier there after my surgery but I had committed with my injured partner. We were the last team entered to fill out 32 and was probably just bait...so they thought.

Obviously your league can have whatever eligibility rules it chooses to have, but the Rules of Golf specifically ALLOW a single player to represent a 2-man team in Fourball (better ball of partners) competition.  The following language appears in the match play rules for fourballs.  The rules for stroke play vary only slightly, saying that the partner may join the competition between holes.

a . Representation of Side

A side may be represented by one partner for all or any part of a match; all partners need not be present. An absent partner may join a match between holes, but not during play of a hole.

My best guess is that when you played a match or two on your own, you embarrassed someone "important" by beating his team one-against-two.

@DaveP043 ,thanks for the post and info. May help in my one on one. Remember I'm an umpire that has to calmly but firmly discuss infractions from time to time. More info the better and this was my first league attempt. Now here is where I kick my own arse, when I received the global email a few days prior to league starting and mind you we got in the day before and assigned Team 1, several derogorory emails were sent to the director as reply all. Lack of rules, do what ever you want on course, reschedule matches on short notice, etc. I had this gut feeling about things and the buddy system. I know that some liked us taking on contenders, we didn't know them, we didn't care and probably stepped on one of thier necks like you suggest. I enjoyed it, called competition. I still have boot marks on me from others too! :-D

Its a shame, I think you got a bum deal, but at least you enjoyed the competition through the year.

I'm lucky to play in an inter-club league in Northern Virginia, along with @jsgolfer and perhaps a few others.  We have about 10 pages of league rules that have been developed and adapted over the 22 year life of the league,  and we still occasionally have conflicts.  I've been our club's captain for 5 years now, so I've seen the discussions at the captains meetings and been a part of resolving (and perhaps causing) some of the conflicts.  Its never easy to run anything like this, but it can also be really fulfilling.  Since you've been on the wrong end of one of the conflicts, you might want to consider becoming part of the group who organize the league next year.  In my experience, volunteers are very welcome for this stuff.  If you're interested, our league rules are at:

And I'll brag just a bit, if you go to the standings link, that team at the top of the North Division is mine

I agree with Dave, there is never a lack of players, more of a lack of participation to run or be involved in the running of the leagues.  I'm in the second camp, I'll play when they want me to, but don't have the time to volunteer or run our team.  However, I've been playing for a long time and in leagues from different states and have never had anyone be not allowed to play in a fourball because they didn't have their partner for whatever reason.  I'm sure one person can beat two if they are on their game, but typically two are better than one.

Out B-Team didn't fare well this year, but our Senior Scratch team which I play on is at the top of the standings.

Nice. I'll keep your contact info then. @jsgolfer too. I forgot one other thing that happened third week. CTP me. No mention like weeks one and two. Finally asked sternly because when we got in they said I won. Three weeks later when I confronted and threatened an audit I was offered the league. Strange to shut me up I guess. Hell no, give my the $110. After that I wouldn't even put my name on the market. Should have know better.

Update: upset me last night when I received the league playoff brackets and see quarter finalists I had knocked out of 1st and 3rd, still in the brackets from the hard side of the course. Next, the champion flight pair took out the college player pair which didn't suprised me as one thumped me for a -2 our round. His partner was my partner in another venue. The other pair has a mini tour player (don't know if he's still playing though) so that would/will be a great match up. My money is on the champion pair or the mini tour pair. Just too much fire power.

Well I just received an email from the director for the final pairings tonight for the money. The horses I had my money on are not in. Got this really pissed off feeling right now but that's the way it goes sometimes. May have to go hit a few buckets of balls before I umpire tonight: Here is a quick factual summary of what's eating at me. Prize Money $1,000, $600, $400, $250 top four places Team 24 vs 21 playing for first, beat both teams combined 15.5 to 4.5 Team 22 vs 17 playing for third, beat one team (22) who had the best point count of all four 9-1 (second highest point total in the league) * Team 17 had the lowest point total of the four remaining teams, but did not have a match against during league play
