Mid size grips too big, standard too small....

So I when I ordered my irons I went with mid sized grips because the standard grips felt too small. Now the issue is it feels like these grips are a tad too big. I had an older set of irons that had mid sized grips but they seemed to be a little smaller. Does the size of the grip differ between manufacturers? Would I be better off having my grips changed to standard and maybe have a little extra tap under them to increase the size a little to make them more comfortable?

I've played standard, midsize, and jumbo at different times. Any change will feel a bit different at first but you'll adapt to it pretty quickly. Give it a couple weeks and I bet you won't even notice the difference. Then one day you'll pick up a playing partners club and it will feel like a twig.

Have them add tape to your standard grips.  You might need 5 or 6 layers to build up the standard grip enough to feel right.

Thanks for the input guys. I have been using these irons for a few weeks and they still seem to be a little large. I don't really think it's hurting my swing/scores at all, it's more of a comfort thing. I'll look into getting them regripped with the extra tape to try to get the right feel.

I'm not sure I have this right so @mvmac should feel free to jump in and correct me but I believe grips that are too thick can impact your ability to release the club and those that are too thin can cause you to get more handsy and pull / hook the ball.  If you don't see any changes to your ball flight they might not be hurting you.

Is there a good way to measure what size grip is needed?

Yeah just add one or two layers to standard grips.

That's a golf myth IMO. There are a lot of "handsy" players that hit slices.

Here are some starting points.

When taking your left hand grip, the tips of the middle finger should just reach/touch the base of your thumb/palm . If the fingers dig in, the grip is too small, if there is a gap, then the grip is too big.

Well, thanks for the links, according to lamkin:

Your Results

Your size is Midsize

However, Golf pride didn't seem to have a utility to tell me what size I should have. Not that it matters, since lamkin does say I've got the correct size grips.

Not counting build-up tape, two other factors influence grip thickness:

  • Butt diameter (of the shaft)
  • Grip core (inner diameter of grip)

Here's a GolfSmith piece on how the two can influence actual thickness of an installed grip:

Cool. Like I said, it's a start.

The ability to "experiment" with grip size is one of the reasons I like Pure Grips. I've been able to work with some different combinations to find the right fit and only have to use one grip to do it.
