OK, most of you guys are gonna be like, "What the hell is Shane, asking this for? He's a 9.9 handicap, he should know what's right for his game." Well for the most part I do. This is more to for informational purposes, than to help me decide if it's what I want... Here is the setup: As a lot of you know, I play Exotics clubs. (Except my putter: Still Tour Edge, but Bazooka Geomax)... Anyway I'm not hitting my 5-iron bad at all, I hit it about 180 on average off the deck and fairly straight... Off the tee on the one shot a round I need it, I block the hell out of it... However it's treated me very well... I've hit a few friends' clubs, just messing around, and one of them was a 5-hybrid... I hit it only about 5 yards further than my 5-iron, but the damn thing was a magic club... No matter the length of swing, I couldn't miss with this club, I felt like I was cheating... Ironically, it wasn't a Tour Edge hybrid, it was a Taylormade SLDR... But my experience with it made me wonder, "Why in the hell don't I have one in my bag?" Which leads me to the second part of the forum topic: I was on drivingiron.com poking around, and I found XRail Hybrids on their site for $50... The catch is they are factory refurbished, but I don't know a lot about that process... So the easy questions: 1) Do any single digit handicaps or those below 15 or so play a 5-hybrid? 2) Even if you don't would you recommend one to a 9.9 handicap? (Looking for options remember) 3) Do any of you know about the term "factory refurbished"? This is the big one, I'm looking to purchase a couple more XRail clubs as back-ups, but I'd like to know as much as I can about it before I pull the trigger. Any answers are appreciated and considered helpful, by me... Thanks, Shane

Factory refurbished usually means they restore the club back to it's original specs and condition and offer a like new warranty on it.  There is usually some marking on the club to indicate it is a refurbished product and not new.

As for your other question, in my experience a 5 hybrid replaces a 4 iron not a 5 iron.  You might want to make sure you are getting the expected distance out of it, though at that price it's not really a big risk.

I'm sure if you contact the company through their email they can give you some details and the warranty details. You'll never be sure unless you go straight to the source.

Shane

The x-rail hybrids are by far the best clubs I have ever owned.

They are also the only clubs I have ever owned where I thought that if my clubs were stolen my game would suffer. For this reason I have spares.

The 5 wood is amazing too.

Obviously this may not apply to everyone, but I just love them.

I bought a used stiff shaft TaylorMade 3 wood off of Global Golf and, even though it is scuffed up, its face is HOT and it hits pure. $40.

I go back and forth. I used a 4h and 5h most of last year. I tend to sweep at the ball with a hybrid and it often leads to low hook type flight so really inconsistent. Once I started using Game Golf I quickly learned my average yardage 6i-4i is about the same due to the severity and frequency of mishits with longer clubs. Early in the year I went to a 2h-4h XCG6 setup but the hook came back and I was too busy to practice much so I went back to 5w-7w 5i-PW. I have also used hybrid irons in the 588 Altitude 6-4. I'd be better off going back to those, still have but the shafts don't match the rest of my irons. I suppose I could pull the shafts from my 588 MT 6-4.

So Dave, I gather from your post that you are more consistent with hybrid irons than with actual Hybrids? I am able to hit down on my Hybrids, I get a little too steep sometimes and block it right... But not very often... I hit my 5-iron pretty good though, I can take something off of it if I need to... Is it easy to hit like a punch shot out of trouble with a 5h?

Do it, I play 6-5-4 original rocket balls hybrids, I can hit them high and get them to stop, or hit them low and they run.

I do the same with my hybrids (I have the 4, 5, and 6 as well), to me they seem to run farther than an iron when you punch them low.
