How does Jim Furyk hit the ball!! I knew his backswing was funky but his impact position is crazy, the club basically looks like it is on his right hip and he has already turned his hips all the way to the target. Isn't this pretty much the definition of getting "stuck" that some instructors preach about how you cannot hit the ball from this position, and about all you can do is flip at it?

I have often wondered how many swing compensations he has to make to get the ball to go where he is aiming. His swing has been described as a unconventional, figure 8 swing. Also I have read that Trevino, Moore, and Couples have a similar swing to his. I tried his double , overlap grip some years ago, and  learned that it would work  if I  go use to it. I never did, but it is a good grip.  I think he needs this type of grip to limit his hand action with swing he has.

Everyone's swing is consistent and repeatable.

Agree 100%.  I love it when they guys I play with talk about being more consistent.  I think to myself, "dude, you are super consistent... every tee shot is way right and every iron shot is super thin".  I know what they mean... they want to be better, not more consistent, but it still makes me giggle inside... then again I'm kind of an a**hole sometimes.

[QUOTE name="iacas" url="/t/83770/how-the-furyk-does-jim-furyk-hit-the-ball#post_1182465"]   Everyone's swing is consistent and repeatable. yea, i'm super consistent off the tee... if there's trees, you can generally find me in that general location... :~( your thought is similar to what i tell the 3 friends of mine i play with on the few occasions i get out these days... whenever one of them brings up the "consistent" line, i tell them to be glad they are inconsistent, otherwise every shot they hit would suck... :-D we play from the "whites" on muni/public courses... 2 of them couldn't break 100 if their life depended on it, and the other guy and myself can generally bump it around in less than 90 whacks... for all 4 of us, it's the "consistent" shot that results in the usual collection of crooked numbers on the card... the two of us who score better are just inconsistent a little more often, so we make a few more pars and a few less "omg i can't count that high"... :-) one of the guys who can't break 100 has a remarkably consistent swing and shot pattern... it's really bad, and results in a high massive slice, but it repeats... :-P

Yep, it may look weird in some positions but he's not doing anything crazy like translating his head or arriving at impact with the weight back and flipping it. It's his swing and has some quirks but still shares the same commonalities as the game's best players.

Everyone's swing is consistent and repeatable.

Yep, in case anyone hasn't seen it.

I play with a guy who has a Furyk like loopy swing. He had a previous injury where he could only swing with the loop. As long as nobody mentions it he doesn't think about it and usually does well enough to beat me.

Acknowledged.  What I was getting at was a follow-on to the previous post - he holds all 5 Keys and consistently executes them.  His swing may be unorthodox, but it's effective.
