Pebble Beach discounts for a single player?

Hey all,

I'm going to be in Monterey for a conference in mid-October.  I really, really want to play Pebble Beach.  The conference is at Asilomar and that is where I'll be staying (not at PB).  I have time on a Friday in the morning for a round and have heard singles can be accommodated if your there early enough (not a problem for me).  Assuming I can 'walk-on', is there any way around the $495 green fee and $40 cart fee?  Any discounts?  Those kinds of numbers are not exactly something I can share with my wife....

I have gone to Pebble in the very early morning when I was in college to play as a single. Discounts could be had, but it will depend on the guy behind the counter. I was a obviously broke college student so maybe that helped. I played 3 or 4 times and got a discount each time, including once free. All times I paid in cash, not sure what he did with the money, but that is none of my business. This is going to depend on your negotiating skills, how busy they are, how nice the guy is and if he is in a good mood.

Definitely you can play if you are there early enough, but I won't guarantee a discount. Still worth the try, and I recommend you play even you can't get the discount because it is a great golfing experience.

My buddy played Pebble Beach many years ago (1970's). He was pissed when he was told the green fees were $28. He complained to the guy in the pro shop, "The public courses in Ohio only charge $6."

He reluctantly paid the $28.

Unless you have played there often and know the greens very well and how to club yourself there, get a caddie. It's maybe $50 more, and insures max enjoyment on what will probably be the most expensive course you'll ever play, and one you may never play again.

Just because I was curious.... $28 in 1970 was about the equivalent of $170 in 2015 dollars. Still expensive but I could stomach $170 not $500.

My college roommate played Pebble in the early 90's.  It costed him $270.  That's probably more than 500 bucks in today's dollar.
