I have taken lessons, I have practiced a lot, but still have trouble getting weight forward when actually playing.

When I practice at home into a net or at the range I have a pretty good weight forward swing.  I have done most of the drills I can find on 5sk.com and youtube.com to help train myself to properly transition. I have worked on key 2 probably more than any other key.

As I stated in the first sentence, it seems to only be a problem when actually playing that I don't have a good weight forward swing.  Any thoughts or ideas beyond drills, practice, etc. would be appreciated.

If there is an edit function, I couldn't find it...I wanted to add that sometimes I do have good weight transfer when playing, but it is inconsistent.  I have tried to recognize either a swing thought or 'feel' when I do get it right, but don't seem able to find a concrete answer.

Recommend starting a swing thread signing up for Evolvr. Much easier to help when we can see what's going on.

Thank you for the response. I looked into Evolvr, I'm not sure that it is for me right now.

I would  still like to hear any thoughts or ideas why I seem to only have trouble on the course.

I had more trouble in the beginning with weight forward, because I liked the confidence in my new practiced swing. I find it helpful to make a slow swing really getting the weight forward before I swing while the course as reminder. Otherwise I am tentative and try to help the ball by looking up and as result stay more back on my feet. I can tell you Evolvr does work ... but otherwise a swing thread is helpful ... lots smart folks, with great advice here

How do you know you have your weight forward when you're practicing?

I definitely feel the weight on my left foot, and when I do I see/feel such better results in my ball striking.   I have Mizuno MP H4 irons and when I am hitting at home into my net,I get that sweet solid ball strike feedback.  When at the driving range I also see the ball flight, which is pretty good when I also 'feel' the weight transfer.  When I am on the course, often I know that I have not transferred my weight, and still feel weighted to my right side and the ball flight/distance is no where near when on the range.

Not that it always happens (but too often), and I am seeing many better rounds than I used to.  Its mostly that I don't seem to be able to identify the reason (thought or feeling) that I have when practicing versus playing, its like I either have it or don't on any given round.  Like one round I shoot 39 and the next I shoot 48.

I think what @iacas is getting at is that you should film it to confirm. Feel isn't always real.

You have trouble on the course because it's normal to want to fall back on what feels comfortable, what feels "normal".

Are you hitting off mats at the range and at home, and then on the grass of course on the golf course?

And as @mvmac said, film…

I will try to film my swing, I have a couple options to do it, but no way to do slo-mo.

I do hit off a mat at my house, but my home course range is all grass.  What it seems like is a swing timing issue when on the course, but I can't figure out why.

I played at an away course yesterday and shot a 39/43 82.  I played in my local men's league on /Wed night and shot  a 48.  I may be getting a little insight......and the finger points to me.  As I have stated in other posts I played baseball/softball until 4 years ago (I'm 66 now), but didn't play golf too seriously.  I took lessons this past winter and the instructor basically broke my old swing and serious baseball habits.  I now do have a fairly good golf swing, but when playing under any pressure I don't yet trust it like when hitting on the range, so I end up with too much mental game, thinking about too many parts of the swing.  When I can calm my thoughts and not think about the swing, that's when I have much better weight shift and swing results.

Are there some posts or any threads you could recommend for mental game play?

Also I read your post on moving hips slightly forward on driver (can't find the post now) and that was helping on my drives.

Thank you

Met, I have the same problem as you (or at least had the same problem). When you are hitting at home or on the range, you aren't worried about distance and you have a free swing and thus your weight transfers naturally. When you are on the course, you are focusing on the ball and really trying to "hit it". When on the course, try taking one extra club, relaxing your arms, and just swing through the ball. I think you'll find yourself hitting it more like on the range. You'll also find you have a straighter ball flight. Less hooks and slices. At least not as magnified. After a while, you'll notice you won't need that extra club either. I really like this video of Ben Hogan on the Ed Sullivan Show. It really is an effortless swing but has lots of power. Notice the lag he has. The "whoosh" at the end. The clubhead speed is generated toward the bottom of the swing. Try this swing but don't grip the club too tight. Don't tense up your arms and shoulders. Just swing the club. Let us know if it helps. It helps me.

Sweet video. He really is smooth.

I played in a four-person Shamble today at my local club and was doing almost exactly what you suggested, swinging easy and clubbing up.  It worked pretty well, with several long straight drives and some GIR's.

thanks.

I played an alternate shot tourney a few weeks ago. I hit a poor tee shot on the first hole because I was tense. I slapped myself a few times and probably played the best tee to green game I ever played. Did not hit a bad shot the rest of the day except with the flat stick. It carried over to the next day's best ball tourney. it was a Ryder Cup format. I absolutely striped the ball. Not sure what I shot because I didn't finish out some holes when the other team was out of it. Won 3 and 2, but was probably 3 under at that point. And I still couldn't putt.

    • Agree. The next omission needs to be that ridiculous team concept. Nobody cares about a team when they really don’t represent anything except being a group of diminished morality and/or washed up pro golfers. Or wait, we’ve also got total nobodies who’ve accomplished nothing who now get a participation trophy! Doesn’t that sound invigorating!
    • LIV moving to 72 holes is a subtle admission that 54 holes was nothing but a joke all along.
    • I was going to start a thread, but this seems like the place.  Yesterday I played my matchplay match at my local club.  My opponent is a notorious sandbagger by reputation.  The pro once pulled his tournament rounds from the past several years and said that it is impossible his tournament rounds are legit based on his handicap. here is what happened last night.  I am getting 4 shots from him.  His current handicap index is 15.3 i shot 45 on the front.   Was down 4 after nine, he had three birdies and shot even par. I was closed out on thirteen, we halved with a bogey.  That bogey put him one over par for his round.   He then took a triple on 14 and then left. As if that wasn’t bad enough, he lied about his score.   I wrote down on my scorecard what the score was.  He put higher values that didn’t affect the outcome of the match to pad his score and apparently make it not look as obvious.   He shot 36 on the front, but claimed 40.  The higher values for his score were in the online scoring app our club uses.  He did it this way: I won #7. He had a 2 foot putt for par that if he made would still lose the hole.   He picked up and said it didn’t matter since I won.  He took a 5 instead of a 4 after picking up a gimme. on #8 his approach shot on this par 4 was 8 inches.  I verbally conceded the putt but I had hit into a hazard.  I finished the hole with a 6.  Instead of birdie he put in for par. on #9, another par 4, his approach was to 18 inches.  I missed my par putt and then knowing how close I verbally conceded the putt.  I missed my bogey putt, he never conceded mine.  Instead of birdie he put down a bogey. He padded his score by 4 shots on the front.  And then did again on 10.  I rinsed one and made 6 on a par 4.  I putted out and he was fishing balls out of the lake so I drove off to the next tee.  He had 15 feet laying two but claimed a 5.     love to know the odds of a 15 handicap being even thru 12 holes on a round of golf.
